Adirondack Phantoms News Release

PHILADLEPHIA - Zack Smith's third-period goal decided matters on Saturday night as the Binghamton Senators beat the Philadelphia Phantoms 3-1 at the Wachovia Spectrum. The loss was the third consecutive for the Phantoms, while Binghamton remained without a regulation loss on the young American Hockey League season.

Binghamton took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Alexander Nikulin had a puck deep in the Phantoms zone and came around to the right of goaltender Scott Munroe. He played the puck along the ice into the crease, where it bumped off Munroe's pad and slid over the line with 6:10 to play in the frame.

After a scoreless second, Philadelphia tied it 4:32 into the third period. The Phantoms were breaking out of their own end, with Michael Ratchuk carrying the puck through center ice. He gained the Binghamton line and dropped a pass to Darroll Powe, who snapped a wrister from the right side of the slot that beat goaltender Jeff Glass and made it 1-1.

But the Senators answered nearly right away. Matt Carkner had the puck along the near side boards when he sent a pass across the slot. Zack Smith was in the far circle and put a shot high to the upper left corner past Munroe's stick side, giving Binghamton a 2-1 lead 6:13 into the period.

The Senators added an insurance marker with 4:25 left in the game. Josh Hennessy was battling for the puck along the right wing boards, then turned and flung a puck across the slot. Brendan Bell had quietly pinched down from the weak-side point and was in position to one-time the puck past Munroe to make it a 3-1 game and close out the scoring.

Munroe stopped 25 of 28 in the loss, while Glass turned away 24 of 25 Phantoms bids.

The Phantoms now start a five-game stretch of road games when they take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Sunday at 4:00 at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Philadelphia returns home on Sunday, Nov. 2 for a tilt with the Hershey Bears at 5:05. Tickets for that game, as well as all 2008-09 regular season games, are available by calling 1-800-298-4200 or visiting phantomshockey.com.

Comcast-Spectacor recently announced that the Wachovia Spectrum will close after the Phantoms conclude their 2008-09 season. The Spectrum opened on September 30, 1967 with the Quaker City Jazz Festival. After nearly 30 seasons of Philadelphia Flyers hockey and Philadelphia 76ers basketball, the Spectrum gave way to the Wachovia Center in 1996.

The best way for fans to secure a ticket for the final game on April 12, 2009 is to purchase either a game plan package or season tickets. Packages are available now in convenient blocks of 6, 10, 16, 20 and 40 games. Receiving an impressive list of exclusive benefits, discount prices and the same seat for each game begins at just $60!
