Falcons Fall Short On Opening Night in Springfield

The Springfield Falcons lost to the Portland Pirates 3-2 in front of 5,813 at the MassMutual Center on Saturday night. The Falcons are now 1-2-1-0 on the young season as they head to Manchester on Sunday afternoon.

For the fourth straight game, the Falcons fell behind in the first period as Colton Fretter and Nathan Gerbe scored power play goals for the Pirates leading their team to a 2-0 advantage.

With just 19-seconds remaining in the opening frame, Falcons left wing Rob Schremp found Colin McDonald at the top of the left wing circle and McDonald snapped a wrister past Portland goaltender Adam Dennis cutting the Falcons' deficit to 2-1.

In the second period, Gerbe added his second marker of the game on the power play at 9:36 giving Portland a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes of play.

The Falcons pulled within a single goal at 12:08 of the third period when Sebastien Bisaillon's slap shot found the back of the net, but Springfield just couldn't find the equalizer.
