NORFOLK, Va. - Despite falling into a two-goal hole to the Charlotte Checkers, the Norfolk Admirals roared back and scored a buzzer-beater in overtime to win, 3-2, on Wednesday night at Scope.

Charlotte opened up the scoring at 12:15 of the first period. On a three-on-two, Trevor Carrick one-timed a shot from the right circle that slid past goaltender John Gibson. Chad LaRose and Danny Biega grabbed the assists for the tally to give the Checkers a 1-0 lead. Despite being outshot 14-4 through the opening 20 minutes, Charlotte went into the intermission with the lead.

The Checkers struck again in the second period to double their lead. Jared Staal put a wrister on net from the bottom of the right circle as Kyle Hagel to the front of the net. Hagel's deflection in the paint fooled Gibson at 9:52, and the Admirals were down 2-0.

Norfolk knocked Charlotte's lead in half 14:59 into the second frame. Stationed at the blue line, Josh Manson pinched in and caught a puck caroming up the wall. With Chris Wagner providing the screen in front of goaltender Drew MacIntyre, Manson ripped a shot that found its way into the back of the net.

Late in the third period, Wagner struck to tie up the game. Manson took a shot from the point, which MacIntyre initially saved. However, he couldn't account for Wagner who was right there to stuff in the rebound. Brendan Bell grabbed the secondary assist at 16:35 and the 250th helper of his career.

Regulation time expired sending the two teams into a sudden death overtime. The teams exchanged 20 shots, but went scoreless until the waning seconds. Emerson Etem held the puck before dropping it to Manson, who got the shot off at the blue line. Nic Kerdiles screened MacIntyre outside the crease and redirected the shot underneath the goaltender's arm beating the horn and the Checkers for a 3-2 Admirals win.

MacIntyre saved 45 of the 48 shots he encountered, while Gibson saved 39 of 41.

Charlotte did not have any power play opportunities, and Norfolk went 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.

The Admirals round up its homestand this weekend when they host Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in a back-to-back, beginning Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Three Stars:

1) NOR #3 Josh Manson (1 G, 1 A)

2) NOR #21 Chris Wagner (1 G)

3) NOR #36 John Gibson (39 saves)

NOTES ... It was the second-highest total of Admirals shots on net this season as well as the second-most in the first period ... It was also the most combined shots this year between the Admirals and their opponent... Chris Wagner has a point in each game played against Charlotte this season ... It was the only game this season that Norfolk has not taken a minor penalty ... Josh Manson earned a "Gordie Howe hat trick" for his goal, assist and fight, and was a +3 on the night.
