Penguins Pound IceCaps 5-1

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fired two goals on their first three shots en route to a 5-1 decision over the St. John's IceCaps Wednesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The Penguins opened scoring at 4:24 of the first period when captain Tom Kostopoulos capitalized on an IceCaps defensive zone turnover and beat St. John's netminder Connor Hellebuyck. Less than a minute and a half later, the Penguins made it 2-0 when Bobby Farnham outskated a pair of IceCaps and sniped a breakaway goal.

Some aggressive forechecking paid off for the Penguins at 4:20 of the second period as Conor Sheary dented the twine to increase the lead to 3-0. The IceCaps found life some late in second while shorthanded, as Keaton Ellerby finished off a JC Lipon pass on a two-on-one at 18:52. The goal was Ellerby's first as an IceCap.

Sherry netted his second of the game, just 59 seconds into the final frame with the Penguins on the powerplay, as he converted another IceCaps turnover. Scott Wilson sealed the win for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with an empty netter at 18:47.

The IceCaps are in action again on Friday versus the Senators at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial in Binghamton. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:35 p.m. NST.
