Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Harrisburg, Pa. - The Baysox outlasted the Senators on the way to a 6-2 win Wednesday afternoon in Harrisburg. With the victory, the Baysox win their fifth consecutive series and first against the Senators this season. The win also improves the Baysox to 53-42 on the season, just three and a half games behind the first place Senators.
Designated hitter Joe Mahoney and shortstop Pedro Florimon continued to provide the offense for the Baysox as they combined for four of the team's six RBIs. In the three game series, the two batters recorded three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs.
The Baysox got off to a fast start with three runs in the first inning against Harrisburg starter Tanner Roark. With one out, second baseman Greg Miclat singled to right field and went to second base when third baseman Buck Britton reached on a fielding error by first baseman Tyler Moore. Mahoney followed with a home run to right-center field that put the Baysox up 3-0.
Harrisburg got one run back in the bottom of the first inning against left-handed Baysox starter Zach Britton. With one out, Derek Norris singled to left field and moved to second when Bill Rhinehart was hit by a pitch. Britton struggled with his control early as he then walked back-to-back batters to allow Norris to score and bring the Senators to within two.
The Senators cut into the Baysox lead again with another run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Derek Norris doubled to right field and was awarded third when Britton was charged with a balk. With two outs, Moore plated Norris with a double to center field to make the score 3-2. For Moore, the RBI was his 14th of the season in 16 games against the Baysox.
Bowie extended the lead back to two with a run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, catcher Caleb Joseph singled to left field and stole second base as first baseman Brandon Waring struck out. Harrisburg then chose to intentionally walk Florimon in order to get to right fielder Ronnie Welty, who made them pay with a double to left field that scored Joseph and put the Baysox up 4-2.
The Baysox tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth inning against Harrisburg reliever Carlos Martinez. With one out, left fielder LJ Hoes doubled to left field and moved to third base when Joseph singled to third base. Waring plated Hoes with a singled to left field and Florimon drove in the second run of the inning with a single to left field that gave the Baysox at 6-2 lead.
Britton pitched four innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out four though he did not factor into the decision. Right-handed reliever Armando Gabino earned the win as he pitched two and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief of Britton. Left-handed reliever Pedro Viola recorded the final out of the seventh inning and right-handed reliever Pat Egan recorded the first two outs in the eighth inning before running into trouble and allowing the Senators to load the bases. Right-handed reliever Raul Rivero finished the game for the Baysox by pitching one and one-third scoreless innings.
The Baysox offense recorded 12 hits in the game, with each player in the batting order recording at least one hit. Joseph and Hoes were the only players to record multiple hits as they came through with three and two respectively.
Bowie's bats were alive for the entire series as they recorded 13 extra-base hits in the three games combined. The Baysox recorded double-digit hits in both of their wins and still managed nine hits in Tuesday's loss.
The Baysox return home Thursday, July 21, for a seven game home stand that features Daddy Daughter Date Night Thursday night, Bowie's Largest Pillow Fight and Heroes Night Friday, Welcome to Margaritaville Saturday night and the Jayson Werth Bobblehead giveaway Monday, July 25.
