Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, Ohio - One day after the Altoona Curve were shutout by the Akron Aeros, the Curve put together a three-hit shutout performance in a, 4-0, win led by starter Kyle McPherson in the finale of a three-game series in Canal Park in Akron, Ohio.
McPherson battled the 90 degree-heat and humidity to allow only two hits and one walk through six innings of work as he kept the Aeros players off balance all game long. He ended the ballgame with six strikeouts on the day. The win pushes his record to 4-3 with the Curve through eight starts with a 2.82 ERA.
For the first time this series, the Curve grabbed a lead against the Aeros in the third inning. Scoring the game's first run against the fifth overall pick in the 2010 draft, Drew Pomeranz, was Brad Chalk as he walked to lead off the inning before a single put him on third. With one down, Starling Marte hit a sacrifice fly for the Curve to take a 1-0 lead.
The game remained at 1-0 through both of the starter's days of work. For the Aeros, Pomeranz was lifted after five innings of work, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts, but the story was the pitching of McPherson.
Against Adam Miller, the Curve provided some run support for their pitching staff as, in the eighth inning, with the bases clear and two out, Marte singled before back-to-back RBI doubles by Brock Holt and Andrew Lambo to extend the advantage to 3-0.
In the top of the ninth, the Curve added another run as Matt Curry scored on a single by Chalk after his second double of the day.
The Curve salvaged a game in the three-game series with the Aeros and ended 3-4 on their seven-game trip before returning home to Altoona for a four-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats.
On a Thirsty Thursday and the third night in the Nittany Travel Summer Cruise Series, the Curve return home on Thursday at 7 p.m. Fans can take advantage of the $2 Yuengling 16 oz. drafts and $1.50 regular-size sodas throughout the game on Thursday night.
The first 500 fans 21 & up through the gates on Thursday night will receive a Shot Glass Giveaway courtesy of Yuengling Lager as the third item in the four-part Nittany Travel Summer Cruise Series.
