TODAY: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and New Britain Rock Cats will meet in the finale of a three-game series...Left-hander Wilmin Rodriguez allowed two runs, one earned, in a five-inning spot-start for the Flying Squirrels and Richmond led wire-to-wire in a 7-5 victory over the Rock Cats on Tuesday night in front of 5,687 fans at New Britain Stadium.
TODAY'S STARTERS: Left-hander Ryan Verdugo gets the nod in the series finale for the Flying Squirrels...Making his 18th start of the season and his seventh against the Baysox...Enters the 2011 season rated as the #25 prospect in the San Francisco Giants farm system according to Baseball America...Earned the win in his last outing 7/15 at Bowie...Allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings...Struck out nine batters and walked two...Both hits allowed were doubles by Greg Miclat...Retired the leadoff batter in all seven innings on the mound...Recorded seven groundouts and five flyouts/popouts...Threw 92 pitches, 56 strikes...Threw 14 pitches or less in five of his seven innings on the mound...Threw first-pitch strikes to 13 of the 25 batters he faced...Outing was his fifth quality start in 17 total...Worked a scoreless outing for the third time in 17 starts overall...Has not allowed a run in 10 1/3 innings...Has allowed two runs on five hits (.125 OBA) in 12 1/3 innings over his last two starts, striking out 16 batters and walking five...Was 1-4 over his previous four starts, allowing 20 runs, 19 earned (10.06 ERA), on 25 hits (.362 OBA) in 17 innings...Named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week 5/30/11-6/5/11...Went a combined 8-1 with a 1.87 ERA in 44 games, including one start, with Low-A Augusta and San Jose...Suffered the first loss in his pro career 4/29/10 at Hagerstown...Pitched with Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League in 2010...Went 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA in seven starts while striking out 26 batters and walking 16...Began the 2009 season in Extended Spring Training...Went 4-0 with a 1.27 ERA in 23 games with the AZL Giants and Low-A Augusta...Selected in the 9th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended LSU and Skagit Valley (WA) College.

GOOD DAY': The Flying Squirrels 6-10 in day games after night games and 8-11 overall in day games...Richmond is 7-4 in rubber matches this season.
LONELY ROAD: The Flying Squirrels are 2-4 on their current road trip with last night's 7-5 win at New Britain...The club has been outscored 40-22 over the first six games of the trip...Richmond's pitching staff has a 6.48 ERA (36ER/50 IP) on the trip and the staff's overall ERA has risen from 3.03 to 3.23.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Flying Squirrels are in the middle of a stretch where they are playing 14 of 20 games on the road...Overall, the club is 17-28 - the second-worst road record in the Eastern League - on the road, and is batting .214 and averaging 3.38 runs per game (152R/45G) in 45 road contests...The club recently completed a stretch where it played 19 out of 26 games at home, going 16-10 overall including an 13-6 mark at home...The club is 32-17 overall at home - the second-best home record in the league - and is batting .261 in 49 games at The Diamond while averaging 4.57 runs per game at home (224R/49G).
MAGIC NUMBER: The Flying Squirrels improved to 24-2 when scoring six or more runs in a game with last night's 7-5 win at New Britain...One of the club's two losses when scoring six or more runs occurred in the series opener with the Rock Cats on Monday night...Overall in the series, Richmond has scored 13 runs and is hitting .333 (25-for-75) with nine extra-base hits including eight doubles and a triple...The club is 25-43 when scoring five runs or less.
THE GEORGIA PEACH: Second baseman Charlie Culberson went 3-for-5 last night with three doubles, two RBIs, and a run scored...He became the first Flying Squirrel in the two-year history of the franchise to collect three doubles in a game...Culberson leads the club with 23 doubles and also has the team lead with 32 extra-base hits...It was the second time this season that a Richmond batter recorded three extra-base hits in a game (Chris Dominguez - 6/27 vs. Harrisburg)...The three hits overall matched a season-high for Culberson, the seventh time this season that the 22-year-old has posted a three-hit performance...He is hitting .348 (31-for-89) over his last 22 games and has raised his batting average from .248 to .272 over that span.
JOHNNY ON THE SPOT: Catcher Johnny Monell is batting .382 (29-for-76) over his last 27 games with six doubles, three home runs, 15 RBIs, and 12 runs scored...Over his last 27 games, the 25-year-old has lifted his batting average from .214 to .260...It is the highest that the Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star has had his batting average since he was hitting .261 on 4/15.
PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 3.23 ERA through 94 games and has allowed a league-low 351 runs...Richmond's pitching staff has allowed two runs or less in 35 of its 94 games (37%)...Starting pitching has allowed three runs or less in 66 of the team's 94 games (70%) and the club is 44-22 in those contests.
