(Manchester, NH)-Henderson Alvarez worked seven shutout innings, allowing five hits, and Moises Sierra went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI as the Fisher Cats topped Reading 4-3 on Wednesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Alvarez, the 21-year old right-hander from Venezuela, improved to 6-4 as New Hampshire snapped a four-game losing streak. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.
The Fisher Cats (54-42) opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mark Sobolewski singled and Callix Crabbe reached on an error. Sobolewski scored on a double by Jonathan Diaz to put New Hampshire up 1-0. Crabbe also tried to score on the play, but was thrown out at the plate.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Fisher Cats put together singles by Adeiny Hechavarria, Mike McDade and Sierra to make it 2-0.
Crabbe led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his sixth home run for a 3-0 lead. Sierra homered in the bottom of the eighth to put New Hampshire up 4-0.
Reading (51-46) threatened in the top of the ninth, but fell a run short in a comeback bid. Clint Everts walked lead-off hitter Michael Spidale. The Phillies then put together three consecutive hits against Evan Crawford to pull within a run. Matt Rizzotti doubled, Carlos Rivera (3-for-4) singled to make it 4-1 and Stephen Susdorf doubled to right field to make it 4-3.
Fisher Cats reliever Bobby Korecky came into the game and Derrick Mitchell beat out a bunt single to give the Phillies runners on the corners with no out. Tuffy Gosewisch grounded to short and Adeiny Hechavarria played to home for an out as Susdorf tried to score. Korecky then recorded back-to-back fly outs to retire Fidel Hernandez and Tim Kennelly to earn his eighth save.
