LumberKings Win Slugfest Despite Renz's Monster Night

May 15, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings and Cedar Rapids Kernels engaged in an epic offensive battle Monday night, with Kernels right-fielder Jordan Renz posting a night that few can even dream of. Renz blasted three home runs, including a grand slam and drove in a record-tying 10 runs in a 4-for-5 night, but the LumberKings did some blasting of their own, scoring in seven of eight innings en route to an 18-14 victory.

Renz also doubled and scored four runs, but the RBI total was the most notable. The 10 RBI's matches a Midwest League single-game record held by three players. Bobby Smith (Clinton, June 13th, 1959), James Noonan (Wausau, May 4th, 1978) and Michael Bishop (Quad Cities, June 24th, 1978) all reached the mark previously.

The LumberKings offense was a bit more spread out, with nine players recording at least an RBI. Several L-Kings had huge nights as well. Matt Smith went 4-for-6 with a double and three runs scored. Terry Blunt added a pair of doubles in a 3-for-5 night. John Mayberry extended his hitting streak to five games as he belted his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot off Kernels reliever Tim Mattison.

Every LumberKings player with at least one plate appearance got a hit. Blunt and Jose Vallejo each led the team with three RBI's apiece. The win gave the L-Kings a 3-1 series victory over Cedar Rapids; their first series win of the year.

LumberKings starter Juan Jimenez lasted four innings in his first start of the year, allowing five earned runs on six hits. Reliever J.B. Diaz (W, 2-0) got the decision for the LumberKings, allowing four runs on four hits in two complete innings of work. The only L-Kings hurler unscathed was right-hander Josh Giles, who pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

Kernels starter Kelly Shearer (L, 1-4) picked up the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) on 3 2/3 innings.

The game lasted just under four hours, with a 37-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth. The start of the game was delayed an hour due to rains earlier in the day.

The LumberKings continue their eight game homestand with the Beloit Snappers coming to town for four games. Game one is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start on Tuesday night. Listen to the broadcast live on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the internet at www.lumberkings.com.
