Renz's big night not enough for Kernels
May 15, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Jordan Renz belted three home runs and tied a Midwest League record with three home runs, but the Clinton LumberKings prevailed in a high-scoring, rain soaked 18-14 contest at Alliant Energy Field.
Renz hit a two-run homer off Juan Jimenez in the third, a two-run shot off J.B. Diaz in the sixth, and a grand slam off Gerry Oakes in the eighth. Renz also socked a two-run double in the first off Jimenez to stake the Kernels to an early lead.
The big night by the Broken Arrow, OK, outfielder tied a league record for runs batted in. Only three other players in league history have accomplished the feat: Michael Bishop of the Quad Cities in 1978, Wausau's James Noonan also in 1978, and Clinton's Bobby Smith in 1959.
But all the offense provided by Renz went for naught as the LumberKings scored at least one run in every inning except the eighth to improve to 13-24. The Kernels fell to 18-20.
Diaz (2-0) picked up the victory for Clinton despite allowing four runs over two innings of work. Kelly Shearer (1-4) took the loss for the Kernels after surrendering eight runs (five earned) and nine hits through 3 2/3 innings of work.
The game was delayed for 1 hour and 39 minutes by rain in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Clinton pounded out 18 hits and the Kernels committed a season-high five errors in the loss.
Brad Coon drove in a pair of runs and Warner Madrigal also had an RBI for the Kernels, who leave Alliant Energy with a 1-3 record against the Texas Rangers affiliate.
The Kernels begin an eight-game homestand at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday with the first of four games against the Swing of the Quad Cities, a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate. Right-hander Stephen Marek (3-1, 2.41) takes the hill for the Kernels while the Swing will throw Kyle Sadlowski (2-0, 2.36) at 6:30 p.m.
