LumberKings walloped in eighth straight loss
July 12, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - 18 hits by the Great Lakes Loons were more than enough to top the Clinton LumberKings in an 10-1 thumping on Thursday night at Ashford University Field. The LumberKings (9-11, 48-41) took their eighth straight loss to mark the longest losing streak for the team in three years.
Great Lakes (5-16, 29-60) did most of their damage in the second inning. LumberKings starter Randy Bell was charged with allowing seven of the Loons runs in the inning as they batted around to send 11 men to the plate. The inning was the most runs allowed in a frame this season by LumberKings pitching and Bell (1-2) failed to get through the inning.
In a brief 1.2 inning outing the LumberKings starter was hung with the loss. Bell allowed all of his seven runs in the second inning while surrendering eight hits, walking one, and striking out one.
The Loons added on against Bell's replacement Steven Moyers, who saved the LumberKings bullpen with 5.1 innings of work. Moyers allowed a run in the top of the third and two more runs in the top of the sixth which capped the Loons scoring for the night.
All but two of Great Lake's hits were singles as Brandon Montgomery, Brayan Morales, Romer Cuadrado, Luke Heyer, Gersel Pitre, Eric Peterson, and Josh McLain each had at least two hits in the game for the Loons.
The LumberKings avoided the shutout with an RBI single by Onil Pena in the bottom of the sixth. The run was the only one allowed by Loons starter Alfredo Tavarez who earned his first win of the season for 5.2 innings of work.
Tavarez (1-3) allowed all three of the LumberKings hits, all singles, and walked four while striking out one during his time out. Great Lakes relievers Dan Jagiello and Melvin Jimenez then combined to no-hit Clinton over the final 3.1 innings.
The loss is the LumberKings eighth straight and will mean the third straight losing series for Clinton, the most consecutive this season.
