Quad Cities Breaks Late Tie, Tops Dragons 4-3

July 12, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - Alfredo Angarita lined a run-scoring double to left field to break a 3-3 tie with two outs in the eighth inning and the Quad Cities River Bandits held on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 4-3 on Thursday night. The River Bandits have won the first two games of the three-game series, both by one run.

The River Bandits held a 3-1 lead until Dayton's Leandro Santana blasted a two-run home run to left field to tie the game in the sixth inning. The homer from Santana, his seventh of the year, was only the third hit of the game for the Dragons. They fell behind mostly due to poor defensive play as they committed five errors over the first four innings and finished the night with six, one short of the club record.

The game was tied 3-3 in the eighth when Angarita drove in Scott Schreiber from first base with two outs with a line drive down the left field line.

The Dragons had chances in both the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, a two-out infield single by Andy Sugilio was followed by a walk to Santana to put men at first and second, but J.D. Williams struck out to end the threat. In the ninth, Malik Collymore reached third base with two outs on a pair of River Bandits errors, but Alejo Lopez flied to deep right to end the game.

Dragons reliever Cory Thompson (4-3) was charged with the loss. He worked two and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit and one run with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Dragons finished with just four hits. Sugilio had two infield singles. The Dragons were 0 for 5 with men in scoring position.

Notes: Dragons closer John Ghyzel, who left Wednesday's game in the middle of an at-bat in the after a visit to the mound by Dragons trainer Andrew Cleves, was diagnosed with bicep tendonitis. He is day-to-day.
