Cougars Rally to Get Even, Fall Late
July 12, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Kane County Cougars News Release
Bowling Green, Kentucky - The Kane County Cougars (45-45, 10-11) rallied to tie the game in the seventh inning, but lost 5-4 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (61-29, 14-7) on Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
For the second straight night, the Cougars grabbed a first inning run. With two outs, Yoel Yanqui, hit his third homer of the year, a solo blast to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.
The bottom of the third inning was Bowling Green's most productive at-bat of the night. Jim Haley led off with a single. Two batters later, Haley scored on Zach Rutherford's double to tie the game, 1-1. The next hitter, Taylor Walls, singled to right field to put the Hot Rods in front, 2-1. The next pitch was hit out of the ballpark for a two-run homer by Ronaldo Hernandez, his 15th of the season.
The Cougars slowly chiseled away. In the fourth, Ernie De La Trinidad led off with a single. Yan Sanchez doubled him in to score, cutting the deficit to 4-2 Hot Rods. Eudy Ramos led off the fifth inning with a solo home run. After Jancarlos Cintron singled and reached second on an error with one out in the seventh, Gabriel Maciel brought the Cougars even with an RBI single.
In the Bowling Green eighth inning, Ronaldo Hernandez started the frame with a single. He reached second base on a wild pitch. Two batters after the single, Hernandez raced home to score the eventual game-winning run on Trey Hair's base hit.
Kyler Stout (0-1) took the loss in his Cougar debut. Stout allowed the run in the eighth, his only inning of the night. Starter Jayson McKinley took no-decision, tossing three innings and surrendering four runs. Juan Torres chipped in two scoreless innings of relief. Cole Bartlett matched Torres' two shutout innings.
Tyler Zombro (7-2) notched the win for Bowling Green. The right-hander blanked the Cougars over two innings of relief. Starter Tommy Romero did not factor into the decision, exiting after five innings, coughing up three runs on seven hits. Mikey York blew his save opportunity, yielding the tying run in the top of the seventh.
The Cougars and Hot Rods play the finale of the three-game set tomorrow night in Bowling Green. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Follow the action live with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG.
