Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Center Keith Aucoin scored in the 12th round of the shootout to give the Lowell Lock Monsters a 3-2 win over the Manchester Monarchs at the Verizon Wireless Arena in front of a crowd of 8,955 fans on Saturday night. The Monarchs (9-3-0-2, 20 points) and Lowell (9-7-0-2, 20 points) are tied for second place in the Atlantic Division.
Lowell drew first blood with a power play goal at 6:22 of the first period. Monarchs' goaltender Barry Brust stopped the puck behind the net but misplayed it and the puck bounced out in front. Diving out to the face-off hash marks, Brust made the initial save on Aucoin, but center Colin Forbes grabbed the rebound and scored into the open net. Defenseman Jeff Finger assisted on Forbes fourth of the year.
Forbes gave the Lock Monsters a 2-0 lead with his second power play goal of the evening at 13:03 of the first period. With two Monarchs players camped out in the penalty box, Forbes was positioned at the right post and nudged the puck just enough for it to trickle over the goal line. Right wing Chad Larose and Aucoin assisted on Lowell's second goal of the night.
The Monarchs answered back with a 5-on-3 goal of their own at the 31-second mark of the second period. Cycling the puck, Monarchs defenseman Marty Wilford slid the puck over to right wing Brad Smyth for the one-timer at the top of the left face-off circle and past Lock Monsters' goaltender Kevin Nastiuk. Left wing Noah Clarke is credited for starting the play deep in Lowell's zone.
Lowell almost took a two-goal lead six and a half minutes into the third period. Brust left the puck behind the Monarchs net and center Ryan Steeves picked it up and slid the puck through the crease, narrowly missing the open net.
At 11:29 of the final frame, left wing Jeff Tambellini shot a bomb in on Nastiuk to tie the game 2-2. Clarke skated into the Lock Monsters' zone and dropped the puck off to Tambellini who saw nothing but net for his 10th of the season. Smyth also assisted on the tying goal.
In the shootout, Monarchs fans saw Clarke, Tambellini, Smyth and right wings Konstantin Pushkarev and Lauri Tukonen shoot on Nastiuk. In 12-rounds, Tambellini and Pushkarev scored.
Lowell received shootout goals from Larose, Aucoin and left wing Paul Healey. Right wing Daniel DaSilva and Forbes were also shooters for the Lock Monsters.
Brust (4-1-1) took the loss for the Monarchs stopping 21 shots. Nastiuk (1-2-2) earned his first professional win with 36 saves.
Manchester went 1-for-7 on the power play. Lowell was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
Manchester takes on Lowell again on Sunday, November 20 at the Tsongas Arena at 4:05 p.m.
