Norfolk Admirals News Release

Despite a dramatic third period comeback by the Admirals, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defeated Norfolk 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night.

The game started on a physical note, as the Admirals and Penguins squared off in three fights within the first 44 seconds of the game. The physical play carried on throughout the period, and both teams were penalized several times in the first. However, Wilkes-Barre and Norfolk killed off two and three power plays, respectively. The Admirals held an 8-4 shots edge in the opening frame, but the game was scoreless as the teams skated off for the first break.

Wilkes-Barre came out firing the puck in the second stanza, getting six shots on Admirals netminder Corey Crawford before Norfolk got its first. The Penguins opened scoring with a power play goal 3:41 into the period. Matt Hussey got a pass to Michel Ouellet at the bottom of the faceoff circle to the right of Crawford. Ouellet's snap shot beat Crawford high to his glove side to give Wilkes-Barre a 1-0 lead.

The Penguins scored again with just under three minutes to go in the period. Crawford stopped a deflection try by Matt Hussey, but Ryan Stone put the rebound past the scrambling netminder. The four-on-three power play goal at 17:51 gave Wilkes-Barre a 2-0 lead, and the Penguins evened-up the shot clock at 15-15 at the second intermission.

The Admirals' comeback efforts began midway through the third. Jason Morgan's shot from the faceoff circle to the left of Wilkes-Barre netminder Dany Sabourin was stopped. But Milan Bartovic put the rebound past the Penguins goalie just as a Wilkes-Barre penalty expired to cut the deficit to 2-1.

A little under six minutes later, Nathan Barrett carried the puck around a Penguins defenseman behind the Wilkes-Barre net. He wrapped a shot around the side of the cage that deflected off the skate of Penguins defenseman Andy Schneider and past Sabourin at 14:02. The even strength goal set the stage for overtime with the score deadlocked at 2-2.

However, the Admirals comeback bid fell short in the extra session. Wilkes-Barre defenseman Chris Kelleher blasted a one-timer that eluded Crawford 40 seconds into overtime. The power play goal gave the Penguins a 3-2 victory.

Corey Crawford stopped 22 of Wilkes-Barre's 25 shots, but was saddled with the overtime loss. Penguins netminder Dany Sabourin stopped 21 of 23 Admirals shots and picked up the win.
