Barons Fall to Grand Rapids, 5-3
November 19, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND, OH - Five third period goals by the Grand Rapids Griffins was too much for the Barons to handle in a 5-3 loss to the Griffins. Following a come-from-behind win last night, the Griffins now lead the Barons in the regular season series 3-0-0-0.
Jamie Holden made his eighth appearance of the year for the Barons and looked sharp through the opening twenty minutes of action. Tested with 11-shots on goal, Holden held the Grand Rapids offense at bay in a scoreless period. Joey MacDonald made his second appearance of the year for Grand Rapids but was required to just make 7-saves in the stanza.
Cleveland scored the opening two goals of the contest in the second period for a 2-0 lead after forty minutes of play. In his pro debut after off-season knee surgery, Tom Cavanagh assisted on both goals. Shane Joseph was the recipient of a beautiful pass converting for his third of the season before Riley Armstrong scored his first of the year 37-seconds later. The Barons out-shot Grand Rapids 11-9 in the middle frame.
Valterri Filppula scored the first of five third period goals for the Griffins, his 8th of the year to begin a dramatic comeback for the North Division leaders. Following the Griffins goal Cavanagh scored his first goal as a pro to complete a three-point night, but unfortunately for the Barons it was the last of the offense they would see. Filppula would score twice more while Matt Ellis and Jiri Hudler tacked on additional goals in the Griffins' 5-3 win. Hudler's goal was counted as the game-winner and led the 7th consecutive come-from-behind win the Griffins have registered this year. After setting a franchise record with five straight home ice wins, the Barons have dropped their last two and are now 7-9-1-0 overall.
The holiday week will be spent on the road for your Barons who play in Hershey on Wednesday night and Hamilton on Friday. The team returns to home ice next Saturday afternoon at 1pm and Sunday evening at 5pm to host Manitoba in back-to-back games versus the Moose.
