Loons Lose Another Tight Contest

BELOIT, Wisc. - Marcus Chiu homered in the ninth inning, but the Loons' rally fell short as the Beloit Snappers secured the series with a 3-2 victory on a pleasant Tuesday evening at Pohlman Field.

The Loons have played in five straight one-run games and have fared 2-3 in that span. Beloit clinched its fourth series in a row over the Loons dating back to 2015. The Loons have lost five straight games at Pohlman Field and nine of their last 11 games to the Oakland A's affiliate.

Monday's series opener saw 24 combined hits; Tuesday's game only produced 10 hits. The Loons grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning for the second straight game when Beloit first baseman Hunter Hargrove dropped the third out of the inning and allowed Brayan Morales to score from third.

Beloit tallied all of its runs in the third. Loons' righty Melvin Jimenez pitched effectively through his first two innings, but allowed the Snappers to tie the game when a committed a balk with a runner on third base.

The balk triggered a downward spiral for Jimenez, who proceeded to allow a 402-foot solo home run to Lazaro Armenteros on the ensuing pitch. Armenteros is the A's ninth-ranked prosect, according to Baseball America, and made his Midwest League debut on Monday in the series opener.

Jimenez eventually walked three batters in the inning. His third free pass occurred with the bases loaded and scored the Snappers' third run of the frame.

The Loons' offense remained quiet until Chiu's home run in the ninth. It was Chiu's second home run in as many games; he had previously not hit a home run since April 8. Beloit starter Xavier Altamirano threw six innings and tied his career mark with eight strikeouts.
