South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: Coming off a series victory against the Peoria Chiefs over the weekend, the South Bend Cubs cruised their way to their third straight win behind Cory Abbott's five inning shutout performance to win the game 5-3 over the Burlington Bees.
Abbott made his fifth start of the season looking for his second professional victory. Despite walking three batters including two in the 2nd inning, Abbott picked up a career high eight strikeouts while allowing just two hits. His ERA now drops to 3.20 on the season with a record of 2-1.
The South Bend bullpen backed Abbott's performance with Jose Albertos and Manuel Rodriguez working a combined four innings. The two right handers allowed a combined three runs. Albertos ran into trouble in the 6th inning with two runners on base, but ended up striking out three in the frame including Harrison Wenson to end the inning.
The Cubs capitalized off of five errors made by the Bees on Monday. Three of the errors came from the catcher Wenson. The other two were both charged to shortstop Leonardo Rivas. Burlington starter Simon Mathews took the loss to bring his record to 0-2 on the year. Mathews allowed five runs with four of them being earned due to the errors.
Since the return of Jared Young and Michael Cruz, South Bend's offense has been provided a jolt. Young had a 2/4 night with an RBI and Cruz drove in a run on a RBI sac fly in the 3rd inning. Roberto Caro continues to shine for the Cubs. Since being sent down two weeks ago from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Caro has driven in 11 RBI in 14 games. He finished 3/4 on Monday with two runs and a RBI.
South Bend continues to inch closer back to the .500 mark on the season after losing six in a row prior to the final two games in Peoria. With a three game winning streak, the Cubs have the chance to win the series against Burlington tomorrow. That would give them back-to-back series wins for the first time this season.
Right hander Erich Uelmen will take the ball for South Bend tomorrow. Uelmen is 1-3 on the season so far with an ERA at 10.20. He will be opposed by Bees right hander Luis Madero who possesses a record of 0-2 and a 4.20 ERA. First pitch from Four Winds Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
