Maciel Carries Offensive Load in Loss

Geneva, Illinois - Despite a 4-for-5 outing from Gabriel Maciel, the Kane County Cougars lost to the Lake County Captains, 9-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field.

The Captains (14-16) began the top of the third inning with three consecutive singles. With Gian Paul Gonzalez and Ernie Clement aboard, Jorma Rodriguez singled to left field to give the Captains a 1-0 lead. On a double steal with one out, Clement stole third and Rodriguez swiped second. The next batter, Oscar Gonzalez, grounded out to shortstop to drive in Lake County's second run. In the top of the fifth, Nolan Jones singled with one out. Two hitters later, Will Benson homered to right field, expanding the Captains' lead to 4-0.

In the Cougars' (13-16) sixth inning, Jasrado Chisholm's double to center and Eudy Ramos' single put runners at first and third with one away. Ernie De La Trinidad trimmed the deficit to 4-1 with a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the eighth, Todd Isaacs led off with a single. With one out Clement walked. For the second time in the game, the Captains executed a double steal, advancing Isaacs to third and Clement to second. Jorma Rodriguez followed with a two-run single, lengthening the margin to 6-1 Captains. Lake County used a pair of two-out singles and Gian Paul Gonzalez's three-run homer to go ahead 9-1 in the top of the ninth.

Gabriel Maciel hit his first Midwest League homer for the Cougars, a two-run shot in the ninth.

Cougars' starting pitcher Cole Stapler (1-2) took the loss. The right-hander allowed four runs on 10 hits over 4.2 innings of work, striking out five and walking none. Cole Bartlett surrendered two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. Breckin Williams allowed the Captains to score three times in 1.2 innings.

Eli Morgan (2-0) picked up the win for Lake County, tossing five shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out eight batters. Dakody Clemmer yielded one run on four hits in 1.1 innings. Skylar Arias (1) allowed Maciel's home run, but recorded an eight-out save.

The Cougars' six-game homestand continues Wednesday afternoon with game three of three against Lake County. The Cougars will send righty Jhoan Duran (0-0, 2.25) to the mound.
