Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars rode Brian Shaffer's pitching and Jasrado Chisholm's fourth homer of the year to knock off the Lake County Captains, 7-1, on Monday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.
The Captains (13-16) stranded a lead-off double in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, Gabriel Maciel led off with a walk, moved to third on Chisholm's single, then scored on Renae Martinez's sacrifice fly to push the Cougars (13-15) to a 1-0 advantage. In the fourth, Will Benson hit a solo shot to left-center field to tie the game, 1-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Chisholm unloaded the eventual game-winning home run, a solo blast to right field. Yan Sanchez's RBI double later in the inning made it 3-1 Cougars.
The Cougars poured on four more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. All four runs came with two outs. Joey Rose drove in a run with an RBI single to left, padding the lead to 4-1. A throwing error allowed Yan Sanchez to reach third and Rose to scoot up to second base. The next batter, Luis Basabe, singled to right field to plate two runs and expand the margin to 6-1 Cougars. Maciel followed with a double to drive in Basabe, capping the four-run rally.
Cougars' starting pitcher Brian Shaffer (1-2) became the first on the staff to last seven innings this season. He held the Captains to one run on six hits, including three strikeouts and two walks to earn the win. Abraham Almonte provided a hold with a 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning. Matt Brill tossed a scoreless ninth inning, scattering two hits.
Lake County starter Kirk McCarty (1-2) also lasted seven innings, but took the loss. The left-hander surrendered three runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking one. Jonathan Teaney yielded the Cougars' four-run rally in the eighth and was lifted after two outs. Manuel Alvarez came in to provide the final out of the frame.
The Cougars' six-game homestand continues Tuesday afternoon with game two of three against Lake County. The Cougars will send righty Cole Stapler (1-1, 2.33) to the mound. The Captains will call on right-hander Eli Morgan (1-0, 1.89). First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Seniors eat free during tomorrow's game (65 and older).
