Loons Fall in Finale to South Bend
April 17, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, Indiana - On a night void of offense at Four Winds Field, it was the South Bend Cubs who made fewer mistakes en route to a 2-1 win in a series clinching victory on Wednesday night.
There was extra excitement around the ballpark due to Chicago Cubs reliever Mike Montgomery making a Major League rehab appearance in a starting role. The 2016 World Series Champion was only expected to throw two innings rehabbing a strain of his latissimus dorsi. Montgomery threw two scoreless innings.
The Loons' only run came on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Amaya off lefty Eugenio Palma in the third inning to tie the game at one. South Bend was able to score right away in the first inning via their own sacrifice by Andy Weber. The Cubs' first run was allowed by Loons starter Josiah Gray, who saw his earned run average rise from 0.93 to 1.23 after giving up one run in five innings.
South Bend scored the only other run of the game on another sacrifice fly, this time hit by D.J. Artis in the seventh inning off Nathan Witt. It was not an earned run against Witt (L, 0-1) because it should have been the third out of the inning if not for an error committed by Loons shortstop Leonel Valera one batter prior.
The player of the game for South Bend was certainty Cam Sanders, who would have started the game if not for Montgomery's rehab appearance. Sanders (W, 2-0) logged five scoreless innings from the fourth through the eighth before handing things off to Sterling Heights, Michigan native Riley McCauley. McCauley (S, 2) joined Witt as former Michigan State Spartans who threw in the ballgame.
Great Lakes (6-7) finishes their originally scheduled six-game road trip with a 3-2 record after having their series finale in West Michigan postponed due to snow on Sunday. South Bend (7-6) now holds the season series advantage over the Loons four game to three, seven games in to a 19-game set.
The Loons are back at Dow Diamond on Thursday to start a seven-day, six-game homestand against Bowling Green (Rays) and West Michigan (Tigers). Game one on a $1 Family Feast Night presented by Chemical Bank is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. EDT with gates opening at five o' clock. The game can be viewed on MiLB.TV or listened to everywhere on ESPN 100.9-FM.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
