Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Despite a two-homer game from Brad Boyer, the Gary SouthShore RailCats squandered a three-run lead in suffering a 5-4 setback at the hands of the St. Paul Saints on Saturday night.

Boyer posted a first inning homer for the second consecutive game, blasting a 3-2 offering from St. Paul starter Donald Brandt over the wall in right-center to hand the RailCats a 2-0 lead. Mike Massaro came along for the ride after walking with one out in the frame. The homer extended Boyer's team best hitting streak to 12 games.

St. Paul pulled within 2-1 in the bottom of the second, scoring a run without a hit. Jason Cooper led off the inning by drawing a walk from RailCat starter Carlos Rivas. A wild pitch moved Cooper to second while consecutive groundouts enabled the left-fielder to cross the plate. The run stopped a 14.1 inning scoreless streak for Rivas, who had not allowed a run since his activation from the disabled list on June 27.

Homeruns helped the RailCats stretch the lead to 4-1. Mike Rohde connected on his fourth of the season leading off the top of the fourth on a 2-0 offering from Brandt. Boyer netted his second of the night in the fifth, knocking an 0-1 pitch over the wall in right. Boyer joins Cristian Guerrero as RailCat hitters with a multi-homer game this season.

Rivas pitched six innings for the RailCats and departed with the lead, allowing another run in the sixth. The lefty walked three and struck out three. Chris Little, signed yesterday, entered in the bottom of the seventh and struck out the first two batters that he faced before allowing a two-out walk to Adam Frost. Ronnie Bourquin brought the Saints within 4-3 with a double and scored the tying run moments later on a single from Ole Sheldon. James Baker became the second pitcher of the inning, allowing a single to Richard Mercado that scored Sheldon with two outs and handed the Saints their first lead of the night at 5-4.

The RailCats recorded 10 hits in the game, the third straight contest with 10 or more hits in Minnesota. Three of those came from Boyer, who in addition to two homers posted his sixth triple of the year in the defeat. The ‘Cats also left 11 men on base in the defeat.

The series concludes in Minnesota tomorrow with an afternoon game scheduled for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. RHP Scott Shaw (6-3, 4.97) will make his league best 13th start for the RailCats, placing a four start win streak on the line against St. Paul RHP Jake Schmidt (5-2, 5.09).

The RailCats return home on Monday to open a three game series with the Sioux City Explorers at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday will be another Tenth Anniversary Tuesday, featuring a picture giveaway to the first 1,000 fans entering the ballpark and an appearance from Steve Haake. The evening will also serve as a birthday celebration for our beloved Rusty!
