
Eight-run first for Grand Prairie lifts them over Sox 17-9

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox dug themselves a big hole in the first inning, allowing eight runs to the Grand Prairie Airhogs and couldn't rebound as the Sox lost 17-9 on Saturday night in front of 2,223 fans at the Amarilo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Sox starter Colin Allen (1-5) got the loss, allowing eight runs to the first eight batters without retiring a single one. Airhogs starter John Brownell (7-2) got the win, allowing eight runs off seven hits in six innings of work.
Grand Prairie started off in a big way as the first eight batters reached base and score, capped off by a grand slam by David Thomas for an 8-0 first inning lead.
Amarillo got their first run in the first on an RBI single by Cyle Hankerd, but the Airhogs added another in the third for another eight-run lead. The Sox got three runs in the third on an RBI double from Matt Tucker, Fehlandt Lentini scored from third on a wild pitch and another run scored on a double play for a 9-4 deficit.
The Airhogs responded with another big inning, this time scoring six runs off five hits and an error, capped off by a three run homerun by Greg Porter to lead 15-4.
The Sox got three more runs in the fifth as two walks and a fielder's choice led to a Van Pope RBI single, followed by a two-run triple from Tim Alberts to cut the deficit to eight. Cesar Nicolas hit a solo homerun to lead off the sixth to push the Grand Prairie lead to 16-7.
Lentini hit a monstrous homerun with two outs in the sixth to bring the deficit back to eight. In the seventh inning, Hankerd led off with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Pope RBI groundout to cut the score to 16-9.
The Airhogs added another run in the ninth to lead by eight. The Sox couldn't score in the ninth to fall by the score of 17-9.
With the loss, the Sox fall to 27-26 while the Airhogs improve to 36-17. Sunday, Amarillo will take on Grand Prairie for the final game of a four-game set at 6:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 5:50pm.
