Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

WICHITA, Ks.---Wichita Wingnuts rookie Chad Sherman (2-1) shut out the Captains for the first time this year, striking out 12 and holding Shreveport-Bossier to a season-low two hits in Wichita's 11-0 win at Lawrence Dumont Field Sunday evening. The Captains had just two baserunners until the ninth inning and put only one man past first base all game.

The Wingnuts got all the offensive production they would need on three home runs. Jorge Delgado hit a three-run homer off Joel Kirsten (3-6) in the bottom of the second to give Wichita a 6-0 lead early. Mike Conroy, Matthew Powell and Josh Horn started off the inning with singles. Horn's scored Conroy to make it 1-0. Following a Jose Duran sacrifice bunt, Ryan Patterson hit an RBI single and Brent Clevlen notched a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. With one on, Kirsten walked Juan Richardson and then gave up Delgado's fifth long ball of the year.

In the fourth, Richardson hit a two-run homer deep over the scoreboard in left-center field to give the Wingnuts an 8-0 lead. Later in the inning, Kirsten would walk Powell with the bases loaded to add another run to the Wichita lead.

In the sixth, Josh Workman hit his sixth home run of the season off Captains reliever Jameson Maj to give WIchita the 11-0 lead.

Sherman allowed only a second inning walk to Andres Rodriguez and a fourth inning single to Bryan Sabatella until the ninth inning. He retired 14 Shreveport-Bossier hitters in a row between the fourth and ninth innings. Sherman struck out 12, got 13 ground ball outs (one double play ball) and allowed only one fly ball out--a fly off the bat of Robert Perry that right fielder Ryan Patterson made a diving grab on.

Kirsten lasted four innings for the Captains, allowing nine runs on 10 hits. He walked four and struck out three. Maj went two innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out one. Jake McCarter and Alex Cowart pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings respectively.

With the loss, Shreveport-Bossier falls to 1-7 on their current road trip. They have dropped four straight and fall to one game below .500 (27-28) for the first time since their last trip to Wichita, when they were 15-16 on June 14. With Winnipeg winning earlier in the day, the Captains are now six games behind in the Wild Card race.

Game two of the Captains four game series in Wichita is Monday, July 11 at 7:05 p.m. Lefthander Ryan DiPietro (7-2, 4.52) throws for Shreveport-Bossier against Wingnuts righty Jared Bradford (0-1, 2.25).
