Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts shutout the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 11-0 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday evening.
With temperatures in excess of 105 degrees throughout the entire game, Rookie right-hander Chad Sherman pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout, and set a Wingnuts' club record with 12 strikeouts.
Until the ninth inning, Sherman kept the Captains to just one base hit, which came on a line drive single to center from Bryan Sabatella with two outs in the top of the fourth. After Sabatella's base hit, Sherman retired the next 14 batters in a row before Alex Cowart reached on an error by Thomas Fitzgerald with one out in the top of the ninth. Mike Provencher followed with a single off the glove of Jose Duran to put runners on first and second. Ryan Patterson helped preserve the shutout, diving towards home plate to catch Robert Perry's sinking line drive to right field for the second out. Sherman then struck out Joe Urtuzuastegui during an eight-pitch at bat to end the game.
Sherman struck out nine different batters over the course of the masterpiece, and struck out the side during the top of the sixth. From the fourth inning into the seventh, Sherman struck out nine of 12 batters faced. The right-hander threw 114 pitches and walked only one batter.
It was the first nine-inning complete game for a Wingnuts' pitcher since July 10th, 2010, and the first nine-inning, complete game shutout since June 27th, 2009.
Offensively, the Wingnuts scored six times in the bottom of the second to build an early lead. Mike Conroy grounded a single up the middle and took third when Matthew Powell flared a single into shallow right. Josh Horn beat out an infield single on a grounbdall to shortstop, scoring Conroy with the game's first run.
Jose Duran laid down a sacrifice bunt towards third base that put runners on second and third with one out. Ryan Patterson made it 2-0 with a groundball single through the right side of a drawn in Captains' infield. Brent Clevlen hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Horn with the Wingnuts' third run. After Juan Richardson drew a walk, Jorge Delgado lifted a three-run home run over the left field fence to cap off the big inning.
Richardson hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to 8-0. Later in the same inning, Powell drew a bases loaded walk to force home Wichita's ninth run.
Josh Workman hit an opposite field, two-run home run to left in the sixth to provide the game's final margin.
Joel Kirsten started for the Captains and took the loss. Kirsten allowed nine earned runs on 10 hits in four innings. Kirsten walked four and struck out three.
Eight of Wichita's nine starters had at least one hit, while all nine reached base with either a hit or a walk. The 11-0 win was the Wingnuts' largest margin of victory in a shutout.
The series continues Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Jared Bradford takes on left-hander Ryan DiPietro. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
