Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release
AMARILLO, Texas -- It did not take long for the Grand Prairie AirHogs to take the lead for good on Saturday night (as was the case in their 14-2 win on Friday), but this time the AirHogs blew the game open right off the bat, getting eight runs before making an out as they thrashed the Amarillo Sox 17-9 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Danny Figueroa started the onslaught with a single, and after Chris McMurray walked, leftfielder Adam De La Garza misjudged David Espinosa's fly ball to left-center, which dropped well behind De La Garza for a two-run triple. Greg Porter followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0, with a walk to Cesar Nicolas and an RBI single by John Alonso coming next. After Guillermo Martinez singled to load the bases, David Thomas hit an opposite field grand slam, his third home run of the series, to make it 8-0 and chase Amarillo starter Colin Allen (1-5).
The Sox (27-26) got an unearned run back off John Brownell (7-2) in the bottom of the first, but the AirHogs (36-17) got it back in the third on a Nicolas RBI single. Amarillo responded with three in their half of the inning (only one earned), but Grand Prairie ended any thoughts of a comeback with a six-run fourth against Chad Povich and Austin Chambliss.
Thomas and Tyler Henley doubled with one out, and after Figueroa reached on an error, Chris McMurray hit an RBI single, Espinosa drove in another with a base hit, and Greg Porter greeted Chambliss with his second home run in as many nights to make it 15-5.
Brownell gave up four more runs before departing after six innings, having allowed eight runs (five earned) on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Grand Prairie added a run in the sixth on a Nicolas solo shot and their final run in the ninth on a double play, while the duo of Bo Schultz (two innings) and Jon Hunton (one) finished things off on the mound, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
