Late Rallies Sink Bisons' Early Leads in Both Games of Doubleheader
July 27, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Bisons played their second doubleheader in four days and were swept by the Indians in the twin bill on the road in Indianapolis. The Indians put together late rallies in both games that ultimately led to both Buffalo losses.
In Game one, the Bisons fell behind by two runs late in the game and mounted a rally but the comeback fell short in a 4-3 loss. In Game two, the Herd led by three runs, but six unanswered scores foiled the early advantage in a 6-3 defeat.
Game 1: BUF 3, IND 4
The Bisons entered the bottom of the sixth ahead by a run but Indianapolis seized a two-run lead in the sixth largely in part because of a two-run home run from Wyatt Mathison.
The Herd made a valiant effort to counter the late surge in the top of the seventh and were able to slice the deficit to one run on a Richard Urena RBI-single. Buffalo loaded the bases in the frame, however, the comeback was unsuccessful.
Murphy Smith, who is mostly used in a relief role, toed the rubber in Game one for his fourth start of the year. Friday was his first start since June 29 when he tossed five innings while giving up one run and three hits.
Smith provided similar numbers and was exceptional in Game one as he threw five innings and allowed one run on two hits. The right-hander also struck out three batters.
Rowdy Tellez and Tim Lopes produced the first two Bison runs of the game. Tellez was credited with an RBI in the first on a sacrifice fly. He also collected a pair of doubles in the game.
Lopes seared a single up the middle that allowed the Bisons to retake their original one-run lead in the fourth.
Game 2: BUF 3, IND 6
The Bisons were the home team in Game two as a result of a makeup game that was supposed to be played in Buffalo earlier this season.
The Herd held a three-run lead, but the Indians struck back in the top of the sixth. They tied the game with the help of a walk and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded while batting through the order.
One inning later, the Indians took their first lead of the game on an RBI-single by Jose Ozuna that deflected off the foot of Bisons' reliever Tim Mayza and into the outfield. The run came a batter after Austin Meadows doubled. Indianapolis put up a three spot in the frame which the Bisons couldn't overcome in the bottom of the seventh.
The Bisons scored first for the second straight game on Darnell Sweeney's sacrifice fly in the second. An inning later, Jonathan Davis' single and Danny Jansen's double added two insurance runs to the lead.
The Herd sent Sean-Reid Foley to the mound to start the game. The right-hander is the team leader in wins and strikeouts and is coming off a scoreless outing last week. In his last two starts, he has only allowed three hits.
Reid-Foley went six innings and ceded two earned runs. He struck out two hitters and retired the side in order three times.
