Indians Rally Twice, Sweep Bisons in Twin Bill

July 27, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indians used late-inning magic in both games of a doubleheader on Friday night to earn 4-3 and 6-3 victories over the Bisons in front of 13,514 fans in attendance. Wyatt Mathisen clubbed a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning of the opener and was hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth inning of the nightcap to spark another Tribe comeback.

The Indians (56-47) overcame a late 2-1 deficit in game one by scoring three times in the sixth off major league rehabber Danny Barnes (L, 0-1). Austin Meadows singled with one away and advanced 180 feet when he stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. After a Jose Osuna strikeout, Jason Martin used his wheels to reach first base on a bunt single, scoring Meadows to tie the game at 2-2. Mathisen followed with his go-ahead, two-run blast to the deepest part of the ballpark in left-center, giving Indy the lead for good.

The Bisons (46-53) sent seven batters to the plate in their final at-bat, but Dovydas Neverauskas (S, 4) struck out Tim Lopes on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded to secure the victory.

Tyler Eppler (W, 10-5) allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 6.0-plus innings to earn his career-high 10th win. He walked two and struck out four.

Buffalo led 1-0 three batters into the opener. Dalton Pompey singled, swiped second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Rowdy Tellez sacrifice fly.

Indy leveled the score in the second on a Jerrick Suiter two-out single to right. The clutch hit plated Osuna who had walked and stolen second base to begin the frame.

Lopes put the visitors back in front with a two-out single of his own in the fourth.

In game two, the Indians scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to overcome a 3-0 deficit. The Tribe totaled eight of their 12 hits over the final two frames.

The sixth was ignited by a Max Moroff triple to deep right-center, who scored moments later on a Meadows double to right. Osuna followed with a single to set up a Kevin Kramer sacrifice fly that brought Indy within one run. The Indians eventually loaded the bases before Mathisen was beaned on a 1-2 pitch by Tim Mayza (L, 3-2) to force home the tying run.

Indy's third three-run frame of the night came in its final at-bat. Meadows again doubled into the right-field corner with one away and sprinted home on an Osuna sharp grounder that caromed off Mayza's foot and shortstop Richard Urena's glove into shallow left.

Christopher Bostick extended Indy's lead to 5-3 with a double, and Martin capped the late rally with an RBI triple to the wall in left-center.

Casey Sadler (W, 6-5) snapped a two-game skid with his sixth career complete game. He allowed three runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings, fanning four along the way.

The Bisons played as the home team in game two due to April postponements in Buffalo. They grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the second on a Darnell Sweeney two-out RBI single. One inning later, Jonathan Davis dumped a run-scoring single into center ahead of a Danny Jansen RBI double into the left-field corner.

Sadler shut down the Bisons after Jansen's two-bagger, retiring 13 of the final 15 batters he faced.

The Indians and Bisons meet again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. EDT. The Tribe will send 22-year-old righty Mitch Keller (0-1, 10.66) to the bump against former Indian and current Bisons right-hander Brandon Cumpton (2-1, 5.73).
