Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A tough first inning proved too much for the Louisville Bats (44-57) to overcome Friday evening as they fell, 5-3, to the Rochester Red Wings (46-55) in their series opener at Louisville Slugger Field.

Louisville starter Zack Weiss (2-2, 9.00) picked up the loss as he allowed two hits and three runs with three walks in 0.2 innings. Reliever Jesus Reyes turned in a terrific outing from the bullpen, giving up only one hits and striking out four over 3.1 innings. The Bats used a season-high seven pitchers in the contest, in addition to surrendering a season-high in walks with 10.

Rochester starter Nick Anderson only threw nine pitches in the opening frame before giving way to Zack Littell (2-4, 3.63), who earned the victory with three hits and six strikeouts in five innings. Jake Reed notched his first save of the season with a hitless two-inning appearance.

The Red Wings struck first as center fielder Byron Buxton homered to left-center on Weiss' second pitch of the evening. Following back-to-back outs, Rochester coaxed out three walks to load the bases, allowing first baseman Andy Wilkins to bring home two and drive Weiss out of the games. Reyes was then inserted into the contest and evaded further damage in the first, kicking off his strong performance.

In the bottom of the second, the Bats broke onto the board as shortstop Blake Trahan scored right fielder Steve Selsky from second on a two-out RBI line drive single to left. On the next pitch, catcher Morgan Lofstrom tacked on another run with his own single to left, knocking in third baseman Taylor Sparks and cutting the deficit to one. After a wild pitch moved two into scoring position, the Bats were unable to add more as a strikeout closed the frame.

In the fifth, right-hander Domingo Tapia entered for Reyes and tallied consecutive strikeouts before facing trouble with the heart of the Red Wings' lineup. Third baseman Willians Astudillo singled to center, scoring Buxton, who had reached on a leadoff walk. Subsequently, two more Red Wings reached, leading to the entrance of Brandon Finnegan, who induced a full-count groundout to seal the damage. Finnegan was less successful in his second inning of work as a pair of singles allowed Nick Gordon to drive home Jordan Pacheco on a RBI grounder. Following his removal, Finnegan was ejected by plate umpire Reid Gibbs, the first Louisville player dismissal of the season.

Trahan bolstered his solid night in the seventh with a leadoff double to right, eventually scoring on a ground-rule double to left from designated hitter Scott Schebler. Once again, the Bats held two in scoring position, but could not capitalize further as a flyout ended the threat. The final seven Louisville batters were retired as the rally came up short.

The Bats and Red Wings will continue their three-game set Saturday evening with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. Southpaw Cody Reed (2-8, 4.54) will start for Louisville, while Rochester has not announced its starting pitcher.
