From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Clay Holmes tossed seven shutout frames, Ryan Lavarnway homered for a sixth time and the Indians blanked the Red Wings 4-0 to earn a series win last night, their first series victory since a three-game sweep over Columbus going into the All-Star break. The Indians scored three runs in the first off Fernando Romero, all of them crossing home with two outs. Kevin Kramer made it 1-0 with a bloop single into center and Christopher Bostick pushed Indy's lead to 3-0 with a liner into right-center. Kramer leads the team with 19 two-out RBI and Bostick is tied for second with 17. Holmes induced a season-high tying 12 ground-ball outs in his fifth consecutive win, the other 12 GB out performance coming on June 19 vs. Norfolk. Damien Magnifico and Jesus Liranzo each tossed a scoreless inning to complete the shutout.

ROCKED THE RED WINGS: The Indians won the final two games of their three-game set against Rochester by 3-1 and 4-0 margins, leading them to a 5-1 win in the season series. Indy swept Rochester at Frontier Field from June 5-7, outscoring them 20-2 in that three-game set. Overall, the Indians outscored the Red Wings 27-5 and batted nearly 100 points higher in the six head-to-head meetings (.280 to .189). Tribe pitchers combined for a 0.83 ERA (5 ER/54.0 IP) and 1.06 WHIP against the league's worst offense.

ANOTHER SHUTOUT: Indy picked up its league-leading 12th shutout last night. The Indians haven't led the International League for most shutout victories in a season since 2012 when they had 16.

REMEMBER THE BISONS: The Indians and Bisons haven't met since early April, when the teams played two games in Buffalo before the final two games were postponed due to snow/icy conditions. Buffalo has played a league-low 97 games this season. The Bisons' pitching staff has struck out a league-low 688 batters (7.1 Ks per game).

DOUBLEHEADER INFO: The Indians have played just two doubleheaders this season, doing so on back-to-back April days in Syracuse. On April 17, Indy beat the Chiefs 4-2 in a seven-inning affair. The nightcap was postponed due to snow, forcing the two teams to fulfill the doubleheader on the Tribe's travel day back to Indianapolis. Four Chiefs pitchers combined to no-hit the Indians in game one of that twinbill, a 5-0 victory for Syracuse. The Chiefs then blanked the Tribe 7-0 in game two. Indy played a total of seven doubleheaders in 2017, going 9-5 in those contests.

PASS THE TORCH: Brandon Waddell (6.0ip, 1er), J.T. Brubaker (7.0ip, 1er) and Clay Holmes (7.0ip, 0er) combined for a 0.90 ERA in the three-game series against the Red Wings. Indy had not recorded three consecutive quality starts this season up until Holmes completed the feat last night. The Indians' last stretch of three-plus quality starts was a six-game run from Aug. 20-25, 2017. Drew Hutchison (6.0ip, 1er), Nick Kingham (8.2ip, 1er), Tyler Glasnow (6.0ip, 3er), Tyler Eppler (7.0ip, 1er), Clay Holmes (6.0ip, 0er) and Hutchison (7.0ip, 0er) combined for that dominate run against Syracuse, Louisville and Columbus.

BOMB EMOJIS: Ryan Lavarnway hit a 412-foot blast to right-center last night, giving him six on the season and four total at Victory Field. All four of his homers at The Vic have traveled over 400 feet, the longest being a 432-foot shot on June 14 vs. Toledo.

FIRE EMOJIS: Kevin Kramer is batting .339 (57-for-168) in 47 games since June 1, the second-best clip in the International League since that date. He also ranks second among IL leaders in doubles (16), extra-base hits (T-2nd, 24), total bases (95) and OPS (.956) and fourth in hits. He has hit safely in 33 of 47 games since the start of June, 18 of those being multi-hit performances. He has reached safely via hit, walk or hit by pitch in 36 of those 47 contests.

SPIRIT OF THE IL AWARD: The Voice of the Indians, Howard Kellman, will be honored between games tonight as the 2018 Spirit of the International League Award winner. Kellman is in his 43rd season of broadcasting for the Tribe and called his 6,000th game for Indy on June 30, 2017. The award has been presented annually since 2010 and honors an individual for contributions to enhancing the fan experience through dedicated service to an International League team.
