Toledo Mud Hens News Release
NORFOLK, VA - The Toledo Mud Hens used a seven run first inning to defeat the Norfolk Tides 7-2 Friday evening at Harbor Park Stadium.
Christin Stewart launched his seventeenth home run of the season in the first inning and went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Matt Hall earned his first win as Mud Hen pitching six strong innings and recording seven strikeouts.
The Mud Hens found a runner in scoring position early as Dixon Machado earned a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tides right hander Jimmy Yacabonis then balked to move Machado to third. Christin Stewart then turned on a one-one pitch and launched it over the right field fence for his seventeenth home run of the season, giving Toledo a 2-0 lead. Jason Krizan, Grayson Greiner and Mike Gerber earned back-to-back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases. Edwin Espinal then drew a walk to bring in Krizan and increase the Hens lead. Harold Castro ripped a single into center to score Greiner and Gerber giving the Hens a 5-0 lead. Norfolk then made a call to the bullpen and brought in a righty, Michael Kelly with two outs and runners on first and second. Jacob Robson singled to load the bases, followed by a Machado single to bring in Espinal. Stewart then drew a walk to bring in Castro for his third RBI in the first inning. Dawel Lugo then popped out to the first baseman to end the top half of the first inning and Toledo on top 7-0.
Norfolk trimmed its deficit in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homerun by DJ Stewart. This marked DJ Stewarts tenth lone ball of the campaign.
The Tides brought in right handed pitching Matthew Grimes with one out in the sixth inning and a runner on first.
Toledo's starter right handed throwing Matt Hall exited after six innings with his first Triple-A win, allowing two earned runs on three hits. Hall also fanned seven batters while walking three in his third outing for the Mud Hens. Johnny Barbato took over in the seventh in his first game back after coming off the disabled list in Detroit. Barbato did not allow a hit or a run in the seventh inning while recording one strikeout.
Zac Reininger entered the game to pitch the eighth inning. Reininger mimicked Barbato allowing no runs or hits while punching out one batter.
Zac Houston came on to close for the Hens in the ninth inning. Houston delivered a scoreless inning allowing one hit while striking out one batter.
