Stripers Slide Late in 9-3 Loss to RailRiders

MOOSIC, Pa. - A five-run eighth inning for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders sunk the Gwinnett Stripers Friday in a 9-3 loss at PNC Field.

The game went to the bottom of the seventh tied at 3-3, but Gwinnett reliever Fernando Salas gave up a leadoff solo homer to Tyler Austin (5) to give the RailRiders a lead they would never lose.

In the bottom of the eighth, Salas allowed two runners aboard with one out. He was replaced by Miguel Socolovich, who walked a batter to load the bases and then walked in a run to make it 5-3. Socolovich then gave up a grand slam (4) to Abiatal Avelino to make it a 9-3 final.

Gwinnett scored first when Danny Santana hit a solo homer (12) to lead off the top of the fourth off of RailRiders starting pitcher Erik Swanson.

The RailRiders took the lead in the bottom of the fifth against Wes Parsons. With two outs, Austin singled and scored on a double by Mike Ford tying the game at 1-1. Ford then scored from second on a single to right by Avelino for a 2-1 lead.

Luis Marte led off the top of the sixth with a double and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly to center by Austin Riley to tie the game at 2-2.

The lead was short-lived as in the bottom of the sixth, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre went back up 3-2 on a sac fly by Bruce Caldwell.

In the top of the seventh, Rio Ruiz led off with a walk, moved to second on a single by Sean Kazmar Jr. and then to third on a fly out to right by Alex Jackson. Jonathan Morales scored Ruiz with a sac fly to center for a 3-3 tie.

Parsons pitched 6.0 innings with eight hits, three runs (two earned), two walks and four strikeouts. Salas (L, 0-1) worked 1.1 innings with three hits, three earned runs and one walk. Socolovich went 0.2 innings with two hits, three earned runs and two walks.

Swanson tossed 4.0 innings with two hits, one earned run, one walk and seven strikeouts. Cale Coshow pitched 2.1 innings with two hits, two earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Raynel Espinal (W, 5-1) worked 1.2 innings with one strikeout. Tommy Kahnle tossed 1.0 inning with one strikeout.

At the plate, Santana was 1-for-4 with a solo homer. Dustin Peterson was 0-for-3 but was hit by a pitch to increase his on base streak to a team-high 19 games.

Avelino was 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBIs. Ford went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Austin, a native of Conyers, Georgia, was 2-for-5 with a solo homer.

The Stripers (48-56) and RailRiders (54-47) continue the three-game series Saturday at 6:35 p.m. The Stripers will start righty Lucas Sims (4-2, 2.15) against the New York Yankees' No. 1 prospect, lefty Justus Sheffield (1-1, 4.54).
