Nationals' Top Prospect Robles Rejoins Chiefs Tonight in Durham
July 27, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
Washington Nationals top prospect Victor Robles is back with the Syracuse Chiefs after spending more than three months on the disabled list. Robles began the season with the Chiefs but was injured during the fourth game of the season while trying to make a diving catch in center field. Robles was activated off the Disabled List Friday prior to the Chiefs 7:05 p.m. game at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Robles, the sixth-ranked prospect in all of baseball, according to Baseball America, began a rehab assignment with the Gulf Coast League Nationals on July 7th. In eight games in the GCL, the 21-year-old went 6-for-18 at the plate with an RBI, a double, seven runs scored, seven walks, four strikeouts, and four stolen bases. More recently, Robles made four rehab starts with Short-Season Single-A Auburn between July 20th and 26th. With Auburn, Robles was 3-for-16 with three RBIs and a stolen base.
Robles and the Chiefs began the season on the road at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester. Before his injury, Robles went 5-for-13 (.385) with an RBI, three runs scored, two walks, and two stolen bases in four games with Syracuse.
Last year, Robles made his major-league debut with Washington in September. The Dominican Republic native went 6-for-24 with two triples, a double, and four RBIs. Robles ended last season on the Nationals' 2017 postseason roster for the National League Division Series where he appeared in two games and scored a run.
Baseball America named Robles as the "Best Hitter for Average," "Fastest Baserunner," and "Best Athlete" in the Nationals system entering 2018. Since beginning his professional career in 2014, Robles has a .303 career batting average and hasn't hit worse than .280 in a season.
Syracuse is in the middle of a six-day road trip and begins a three-game series against the Durham Bulls on Friday night. The Chiefs return home to NBT Banks Stadium on Monday for a four-game series against the Pawtucket Red Sox, when Robles will make his Syracuse home debut. Tickets are available by calling 315-474-7833, by visiting the NBT Bank Stadium Ticket Office, or online at syracusechiefs.com.
