Kane County Cougars News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars (3-2) used late-inning offense to run past the Cedar Rapids Kernels (1-4) by the score of 9-3 on Monday night. Eight runs over the final four innings allowed the Cougars to cruise to victory.

Tra Holmes doubled on the second pitch of the game to begin a first inning rally. Two batters later, Eduardo Diaz singled to left, scoring Holmes and putting the Cougars up 1-0. Cedar Rapids evened the score in the bottom of the second inning on Chris Williams' homerun to left.

For the second day in a row, the Cougars put together an explosive inning. With one out in the sixth, L.T. Tolbert walked and Alex King was hit by a pitch. Eddie Hernandez was the next to the plate. He delivered his first two RBIs as a Cougar, placing his team in front, 3-1. Later in the inning, Tra Holmes singled to right, scoring Hernandez to cap the three-run frame.

The Cougars and Kernels traded runs in the final three innings. Cedar Rapids cut their deficit to 4-2 with a Trey Cabbage solo homer in the seventh. The Cougars responded in the eighth on Eduardo Diaz's RBI single. The Kernels erased the Cougar tally on Chris Williams' second RBI of the night, a single in the eighth to trim the score to 5-3 Kane County. The Cougars laid the game to rest in the ninth with four runs, highlighted by Alex King's two-run homer, his second in as many days.

Cougar starting pitcher Justin Vernia impressed in his affiliated professional debut. He tossed five innings of one-run ball, allowing just two hits. Wesley Rodriguez (1-0) picked up the win. Cabbage's homer in the seventh was the only run Rodriguez allowed in two innings. Blake Workman and Ryan Miller combined to record the final six outs.

Austin Schulfer (0-1) took the loss for Cedar Rapids. The reliever allowed all three runs in the sixth that put the Cougars in front for good.

The Cougars play game two of the four-game series on Tuesday night in Cedar Rapids. Opening Day starter Jackson Goddard begins the second time through the Cougars rotation. He'll face Kernels' right-hander Luis Rijo. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Follow the action live with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
