Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Chris Williams and Trey Cabbage each hit home runs and combined to drive in all three Cedar Rapids Kernels runs Monday, but the Kane County Cougars recorded a 9-3 win at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Monday's defeat was the third consecutive Kernels contest that included a tie-breaking rally in the sixth inning.

Kane County (3-2) and Cedar Rapids (1-4) traded runs over the first two frames. Eduardo Diaz gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single that drove in Tra Holmes. Williams answered for the Kernels during the second by lifting a game-tying solo shot to left field.

The game remained tied until the Cougars' three-run, two-out rally within the top of the sixth. L.T. Tolbert drew a walk, and Alex King was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive. Eddie Hernandez brought both runners home on a two-out triple. Following a walk for David Garza, Holmes collected an RBI single to secure a 4-1 Kane County advantage.

Cabbage trimmed Cedar Rapids' deficit to 4-2 in the seventh inning. Cabbage led off with a line drive over the right-field wall for his team-high second homer this season.

Both sides added runs during the eighth inning to leave Kane County with a 5-3 lead. Holmes reached on a two-out error and later scored on Diaz's second RBI single of the game. The Kernels responded with a full-count, two-out single from Williams that allowed Yunior Severino to score from first base.

The Cougars pulled away in the top of the ninth with four runs to increase their lead to 9-3. King opened the scoring with a two-run blast into the Plumbers & Pipefitters Pavilion. Near the end of the frame, Alek Thomas' bases-loaded walk and Diaz's sacrifice fly finished Kane County's offensive attack.

Justin Vernia (1-0) won his affiliated baseball debut after yielding just two hits and one run over five innings pitched. Wesley Rodriguez and Blake Workman each earned holds in relief while protecting the Cougars' lead.

Austin Schulfer (0-1) allowed three runs in relief and was tagged with the loss. Schulfer relieved Andrew Cabezas who registered a game-high four strikeouts while conceding just one unearned run in five frames within his Kernels debut.
