Kane County Takes Tuesday Tilt
April 9, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Despite a pair of late comeback attempts, the Cedar Rapids Kernels lost to the Kane County Cougars, 4-1, Tuesday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. David Garza drove in or scored all four runs for Kane County (4-2) in its victory.
After four scoreless innings of play, the Cougars surged in front during the top of the fifth inning. With two runners aboard and one out, Garza doubled off the left-field wall and drove in Jose Herrera and Alex King. Garza scored later in the inning on an RBI single from Geraldo Perdomo for a 3-0 Kane County advantage.
The Kernels (1-5) cut their deficit to 3-1 within the bottom of the fifth. Michael Davis drew one of his career-high three walks and promptly scored when Gilberto Celestino doubled to center field.
Kane County added an insurance run in the ninth to secure a 4-1 edge. Back-to-back singles by King and Eddie Hernandez put runners at the corners with one out. Garza followed with an RBI groundout that allowed King to score from third base.
Cedar Rapids stranded multiple runners in each of the final two frames in rallies that fell short. The Kernels brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate within the eighth inning before grounding into an inning-ending force out. The potential game-tying run batted in the ninth inning, but a strikeout ended the contest.
Jackson Goddard (1-0) held the Kernels to one run over five innings and earned the win. Erin Baldwin and Andy Toelken combined for four scoreless frames of relief to pick up the hold and the save, respectively.
Luis Rijo (0-1) posted a game-high six strikeouts but also allowed three runs in five innings pitched within a losing decision.
This four-game series continues Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. with Cedar Rapids right-hander Blayne Enlow (0-1, 27.00) slated to pitch against Kane County right-hander Ryan Weiss (0-1, 6.00).
