Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - Despite two home runs from Nolan Gorman, the Peoria Chiefs lost to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 10-6 Monday night. The four-game series continues Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.
The Timber Rattlers drew first blood in the second inning against Dionis Zamora. Chad McClanahan got things started with a single, then Je'Von Ward followed with a one-out single, sending McClanahan to third. With one out in the inning, Leugim Castillo picked up an RBI on a groundout.
Wisconsin added on in the third inning. Yeison Coca picked up his first knock of the year, as he tripled off the right field wall to leadoff the third. Two pitches later, Pablo Abreu lined a base hit into left field to make it 2-0. The Timber Rattlers weren't done there, as they capitalized off a bases loaded walk to stake a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the visitors doubled their lead. After a strike out, the next five Wisconsin batters reached, including an RBI single from Castillo, and Jesus Lujano, to make it 5-0. Coca drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, as the Rattlers pushed their lead to 6-0.
In the sixth inning, Wisconsin created more separation, as Gabriel Garcia hit his first home run of the year off Chiefs' reliever Chris Hunt to extend the lead to 8-0. The offensive output continued, when Coca drove in two more runs to push the Timber Rattlers lead to double-digits.
The Chiefs cut into the deficit in the eighth inning. After Brandon Riley and Josh Shaw reached to begin the frame, Nolan Gorman hit an opposite-field home run to record his first homer of the year. Peoria put two more runners in scoring position in the frame, but ultimately left them stranded in scoring position.
Trailing by seven entering the final stanza, the Chiefs offense put up a fight. With one out in the inning, Riley reached on an error. Shaw followed up with his first RBI of the season on a single to right field. Gorman recorded his fourth career multi-homer game, as he went deep to right field to trim the Wisconsin lead to 10-6. Peoria forced Wisconsin into their bullpen, but could not strike for anymore runs.
Zamora (0-1) took the loss for the Chiefs, as he gave up four runs over 4 1/3 innings while striking out seven. Chris Hunt allowed five runs on four hits over 1 1/3 innings while walking two. Right-hander Jim Voyles provided some quality relief for the Chiefs, as he allowed just one run over 3 1/3 innings of work while striking out two.
The Chiefs continue a four-game series at home against Wisconsin, Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Promotions can be found on the team website or social media accounts. The Chiefs will start LH Tommy Parsons (1-0, 0.00) against Wisconsin LH Scott Sunitsch, 0.00).
