Late Idaho Empty-Netter Ends Utah's Preseason Comeback Effort

Boise, Idaho - The Utah Grizzlies fell 5-3 Friday night in their preseason opener at Qwest Arena as the Idaho Steelheads added a late empty-netter. Utah and the Steelheads continue preseason play Saturday in Logan, Utah at the Eccles Ice Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

As they got back into the swing of things in their first game action of the year, the new look Grizzlies struggled early in their own end and trailed 2-0 after one period. The Steelheads came out in the second and tallied two goals in 52 seconds to build a 4-0 lead.

Utah then went on a three-goal tear to enter the third period down 4-3. Chad Denny set up the first two Utah goals with blasts from the point. At 6:25 of the frame, Denny blasted one home before controlling a blocked shot less than two minutes later that was knocked in by Michael Gergen to make it 4-2.

The Grizzlies crept within a goal with 3:30 left in the second period as Tim Crowder knocked home a lose puck. Utah dominated third period play but was unable to find the equalizer.

Both Denny and Gergen finished with one goal and one assist. Goaltender Andrew Engelage got the start for Utah with Marc Rinfret entering the game halfway through. J.P. Lamoureux will join the Grizzlies in Logan Saturday.

The Grizzlies open the 2010-2011 season Friday, October 15 in Alaska with the home opener being Friday, October 22 when Utah welcomes Bakersfield to Maverik Center for a 7:05 p.m. start.
