Late Home Run Dooms Cutters in Batavia
July 16, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters dropped their first game of the season to the Batavia Muckdogs on Thursday afternoon at Dwyer Stadium by a score of 4-2. The series will now shift to Williamsport for games three and four between the two teams.
The Cutters would have plenty of chances to tack on some early runs against Batavia starter Jordan Holloway. Holloway walked back to back batters in the top of the first inning but would get Jose Pujols to ground into an inning ending double play. The second inning would play out the same way for Holloway as he walked two more Williamsport batters to start the inning. Josh Tobias, Gregori Rivero and Grenny Cumana would all fly out to center field to end the inning and the scoring threat.
Williamsport would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning after a one out walk to Andrew Amaro. With Amaro on second base, Pujols would drive him in with an RBI single. The Cutters would add to their lead in the fourth inning. Cumana would ground into a fielder's choice that allowed Tobias to score from third base to make it 2-0. Batavia would get onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run from Alex Fernandez off Alejandro Arteaga to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Muckdogs would tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning against Juan Figueroa. A two run home run by Blake Anderson gave Batavia their first lead of the game 4-2. The lead would hold for Batavia despite a lead off single from Jan Hernandez in the top of the ninth inning. Arteaga was handed with the no decision after working six innings of one run baseball, allowing five hits and striking out eight batters. Figueroa was credited with his first loss of the season working 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits.
