Lowell Spinners News Release
NORWICH, CONN. - Dioscar Romero threw six scoreless innings and Edwar Garcia got out of bases loaded jams in the eighth and ninth innings as the Spinners made it two-in-a-row over the Connecticut Tigers Thursday night, winning 1-0.
Connecticut (11-14) threatened right out the gate as the first two batters reached against Romero in the first. However after the Spinners narrowly missed turning a triple play, settling for a double play, Romero struck out Will Allen to get out of the inning unscathed.
As Romero kept the Tigers off the board, Lowell (16-10) broke through in the fifth inning. After a one-out double by Aneudis Peralta, Jeremy Rivera laid down a two-out bunt that Shane Zeile threw wide of first allowing Peralta to score and give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
After striking out four of the first five batters he faced, Logan Boyd ran into trouble in the eighth with a two-out walk and a flare single put a pair on. Joe Oliver tapped Garcia to come in from the bullpen, and after the righty loaded the bases on a walk, he struck out Tanner Donnels to keep the Tigers scoreless.
The Tigers would threaten again in the ninth, loading the bases with just one out. Garcia however buckled down, striking out Victor Padron and got Brett Pirtle to fly out to end the game.
Romero (2-2, 2.95) continued his string of success with six scoreless, striking out three while allowing four hits. He walked three. Boyd struck out four over 1.2 innings, allowing the bloop single and a walk before Garcia picked up his third save, striking out a pair.
Rivera had two of the Spinners five hits on the night in the win.
The Spinners go for the sweep of the unconventional three-game set when the series returns to LeLacheur Park Friday night. It's Lahey Health Night as the first 1,000 fans will receive a free t-shirt and post-game fireworks will follow the game. Javier Rodriguez makes his second start for the Spinners, getting the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
