Scrappers Make Quick Work of Doubledays

Auburn Doubledays News Release

NILES, OH - The shortest game in terms of time for the Doubledays did not go in their favor as they fell to the Scrappers 4-3 in game two of a three-game series in Ohio.

Auburn took the lead in the fourth after nobody reached base in the first three innings. Rafael Bautista led off the fourth for the Doubledays with a double into left. He came into score when Andrew Stevenson extended his team-high hit streak to 12 with a single into center. Stevenson then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher Daniel Salters. With Kelvin Gutierrez hitting, Stevenson scored after Salters tried to pick him off at third and threw the ball into left field. After three and a half, the Doubledays led 2-0.

In the top of the sixth, the Doubledays had another opportunity. With two outs, Stevenson drew a walk to force Mahoning Valley's starter Casey Shane out of the game. Cortland Cox came in and gave up a single to Gutierrez to put runners on first and third with two outs, but Rhett Wiseman struck out to end the threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Scrappers took the lead. Jefry Rodriguez cruised through the first five innings giving up just three hits while walking two and striking out six, but the sixth was different. Rodriguez gave up five hits, all singles, and four runs, three of which were earned. The crucial point came with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth. Austin Fisher hit a grounder to short that could've been an inning-ending double play, but Edwin Lora committed an error and everyone was safe. The Scrappers ended up taking a 4-2 lead at the end of six.

The Doubledays drew closer in the seventh and put the score at 4-3. Max Schrock led off with a triple into right after Connor Marabell misplayed his third ball in right in the first two games of the series. Schrock later scored on a 5-3 groundout off the bat of Jakson Reetz.

In the eighth and ninth however, the Doubledays never had a runner reach base and fell 4-3 to the Scrappers.

Jefry Rodriguez's final line was 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, and 6 K's as he took his third loss. Matt Pirro and Andrew Lee were impressive out of the bullpen with the combined line: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 2 K's. Casey Shane started for the Scrappers and his line was: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB and 7 K's.

The Doubledays look to bounce back Friday night in the final game of the series at 7:05 PM. Taylor Guilbeau (0-0, 2.45 ERA) makes his first start for the Doubledays against Jared Robinson (0-2, 3.86 ERA) for the Scrappers.

Thursday's Particulars:

WP - Cortland Cox (2-0)

LP - Jefry Rodriguez (1-3)

SV - Yoiber Marquina (1)
