Black Bears Fall to Spikes 3-1

The West Virginia Black Bears dropped the second game of the series to the State College Spikes 3-1 on Thursday, July 16 at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the loss, West Virginia falls to 10-15 on the season while State College improves to 13-12 overall.

The Spikes' scored the first run of the ballgame on an error. State College crossed another run in the third on a sacrifice fly to center field to extend their lead to 2-0 before adding on to the lead in the fifth on a fielder's choice.

The Black Bears offense was pretty quiet all night until the eighth inning when they received their only run of the game. RF Logan Hill grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring 2B Kevin Kramer from third.

West Virginia scattered six hits throughout the game in which Newman went 2-for-4 at the plate with a deep double to left field. LF Ty Moore also delivered a deep doubled to right center to lead off the second inning but was left stranded.

SP Bret Helton pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three runs (2 earned) and tied his season-high five strikeouts but was saddled with the loss (1-4). Pitchers Edgar Santana and Andy Otamendi combined to pitch 4.0 shutout innings of relief, allowing only three hits. State College starter Jorge Rodriguez got the win (2-2), while Luke Harrison was rewarded with the save (1).

The Black Bears wrap up the series with State College on Friday evening at Monongalia County Ballpark with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m. There will be a live band provided by Schmitt's Saloon on the Premier Party Deck before the game with gates opening at 5:00 p.m. as well as a fireworks show directly after the game sponsored by BFS.
