Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
BROOKLYN, NY -- July 16, 2015 -- Matt Blackham wound up on the wrong side of the scoreboard despite pitching a gem of a game Thursday night against Staten Island. The Cyclones and the Yankees went head to head in a pitcher's duel at MCU Park but Brooklyn ultimately fell to their over-the-bridge rivals by a 1-0 score. Blackham dominated through 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run, walking a lone batter, and struck out ten Yanks in total, putting his total for the season at a league leading 40 K's.
Staten Island scored their lone run in the top of the fifth. After reaching on a line drive single to left field, Yankee Brandon Wagner advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt and was brought home on a single by Ryan Krill. The pair of singles were two of just five hits that Blackham surrendered throughout the contest. Ruben Reyes and Christian Montgomery each came in from the bullpen to keep Staten Island scoreless, striking out five batters between the two of them.
A comeback appeared to be in the air in the bottom of the ninth as the Cyclones had runners on first and second with two outs, but Pedro Perez grounded into a force out of David Thompson at third to end the game. Brooklyn managed six hits and failed to get a runner any further than second base. With only three of the Cyclones starting lineup batting over .250, Brooklyn offense remains in a mid-season rut.
Looking to avoid a sweep by the Yankees, the Cyclones return to Staten Island to take on Yankees in the final game of a three-game series. Southpaw Kevin Canelon (2-1-0) will take the mound for Brooklyn for his third start of the season on Friday. The Cyclones return home on Saturday, July 18th to kickoff a three-game home stand against the Vermont Lake Monsters. It will also be Princess and Pirate Night at MCU Park and a Sandy the Bus Driver bobble head will be given to the first 2,500 fans in attendance. Everyone is also invited to enjoy a post-game fireworks show. For tickets call (718) 507-TIXX, visit the MCU Park Box Office, or order online right here at BrooklynCyclones.com.
