West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - West Michigan rallied with three runs to tie the game in the third inning, but saw the game unravel shortly thereafter as Dayton pushed two runs across the plate the next inning en route to a 6-3 victory.

The Dragons jumped in front, 3-0 with a trio of runs in the third off starter Matt Righter. Two quirky defensive miscues helped fuel the rally. One was a dropped ball for an error at third base on a double-steal attempt. Both runners were safe, but the lead runner, Paul Janish was charged with a caught stealing due to the error.

Janish scored on a wild pitch.

Earlier in the inning, Righter had a chance to minimize the damage when with runners at the corners, Ben Himes hit a one-hopper to the mound. Righter, looked Cody Strait back to third, then threw to second, but shortstop Brent Dlugach was several feet in front of the bag. His relay to first was late and in the process, Straight sprinted home with the first Dayton run.

Justin Justice tripled to lead off the sixth and sparked a three-run rally. Steve Young, Wilkin Ramirez and Matt Parrish each had RBI hits in the inning. The drive by Parrish was a double.

Himes provided the go-ahead single in the top of the seventh for Dayton.

Young extended his hitting streak to six games. Whitecaps reliever Ian Ostlund extended his streak of consecutive scoreless innings pitched to 13 innings.

Bottoming Out: Over the last eight games, the Whitecaps are 1-7, all against last-place teams. As a result, West Michigan is alone at the bottom of the Midwest League Eastern Division for the first time this season. It is also the first time the Whitecaps have been seven games under .500 this year (20-27).

Four Day Weekend: The Whitecaps will play in Fort Wayne for the only time this season over the Memorial Day Weekend. A four game series against the Wizards begins Friday night.
