Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL â The picnic area at Elfstrom Stadium will be transformed into the Kane County Cougars campgrounds over the Memorial Day weekend, as the Cougars host three scout camp outs at the ballpark Friday, May 27 through Sunday, May 29 when the team hosts the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays). Friday night features a first-ever Girl Scout Campout while the Three Fires Boy Scout Council will sleep under the stars on Saturday and Sunday. Although Saturday is sold out for the Three Fires Council with over 1,000 campers, space still remains for Friday's Girl Scout Campout and on Sunday for the Boy Scouts. The Cougars expect more than 2,000 campers over the three-day stretch.
All campers will enjoy a variety of amenities at each game including pre-game parades, helping present the Colors during the National Anthem, in-game entertainment such as Myron Noodleman (Friday), the ZOOperstars (Saturday) and BirdZerk! (Sunday), fireworks shows and run the bases. Campers and their families will enjoy a private showing of the Disney/Pixar film The Incredibles on the Cougars centerfield video board following each game before retiring to the picnic area for the night. Prior to their departure each morning, scouts and their families will awake to breakfast featuring a combination hot and cold items, including scrambled eggs, french toast sticks, sausage, cereal and beverages.
"What an ideal way to spend a holiday weekend with friends and family. In its third year, the Ballpark Campout continues to provide an unforgettable opportunity for thousands of scouts and their family members to spend a night together in a social atmosphere while showing the scouts, and even some of their parents, the basics of camping. I wish I would have had an opportunity to do something like this when I was growing up, the scouts have a blast," boasts Cougars Scout Coordinator Steve McNelley, an Eagle Scout himself since 1998.
Bill Pugh, a Cub Scout Camping Leader from Naperville, adds, "It's a great Cub Scout Pack and family experience, our favorite campout of the year; the Cougars do all the work...and we have the fun!"
As part of the Cougars relationship with Scouts groups coming out to the ballpark during the 2005 regular season, the team is donating $1.00 per game ticket purchased by scouts back to each respective council. So far this season, Three Fires alone has generated more than $2700 for their council, and with four family nights remaining, are on track to beat last year's donation of close to $4000.
"The money raised helps to provide services to the youth of Kane, DuPage, Kendall, DeKalb, and other nearby counties. It helps to reduce scouting costs for low-income families and special needs individuals around Northeast Illinois, both recreationally and educationally. We have been working with the Kane County Cougars for the better part of a decade and are very excited with the relationship we have because of the wonderful family-oriented atmosphere they provide to the community and the money they help raise for our council. We look forward to continuing this relationship in years to come." Explains Tim Jewett, VP and COO Three Fires Boy Scout Council
Kane County will host a fourth campout later in the Summer over the Fourth of July weekend on Saturday, July 2, which is open to any council and their families. Space is still remaining but going quickly. For more details, interested campers can contact Steve McNelley at 630/232-8811 ext. 6272.
