South Bend, IN â Wednesday afternoon, the South Bend Silver Hawks and Burlington Bees nearly came to blows just before and after the early afternoon ballgame concluded. Thursday night, the Hawks let their late inning bats do the talking and fighting, defeating the Burlington Bees 6-3.
The Bees scored the first runs of the game in the fifth inning. With one out, Eddie Vega doubled to right center and advanced to third on a fly out to right by Derek Norman. Irving Falu then followed with a double to center to score Vega. Geraldo Valentin then came to the plate and scored Falu with an RBI single to center, giving Burlington a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks responded in the bottom of the inning. Javier Brito opened the inning with walk and moved to third on an Allen Mottram double. Mark Reynolds the followed and was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Travis Gulick came to the plate and grounded to third baseman Eddie Solis, who looked to carry the ball to tag third, but dropped it on his way to the bag allowing all runners to advance 90 feet, with Javier Brito crossing the plate and pulling the Hawks within one at 2-1.The Hawks tied the game when Jereme Milons reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Allen Mottram from third. Emilio Bonifacio closed the scoring in the inning with a run scoring single, giving the Hawks a 3-2 edge.
The Bees tied the game in the seventh, but the Hawks regained the lead and grabbed the win in the eighth.
Carlos Gonzalez led off with a triple and Javier Brito followed by walking. Allen Mottram cleared the bases with a two-run double and that was followed by a Mark Reynolds double down the right field line chasing home Mottram.
The Silver Hawks take off on an eight game road trip to cedar Rapids and Dayton before returning home June 4 to open a four game series against the Cedar rapids Kernels. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM with gates opening at 6:00 PM.
