Dragons Beat Whitecaps 6-3 to take three of four

Comstock Park, MI – The Dayton Dragons (20-26) looked to close out the first half of an eight game road trip with a win over the West Michigan Whitecaps (20-27) at Fifth Third Ballpark on Thursday night. With a win, the Dragons would take three of four from the ‘Caps and win the first half series four game to three. Dayton picked up the win in the get away game taking a 6-3 decision to take three of four in the series.

Dayton and West Michigan played through the first two innings scoreless before Dayton got on the board with three runs in the top of the third inning off Whitecaps starter Matt Righter (ND). Ben Himes picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Cody Strait for a 1-0 Dragons lead. A Righter wild pitch scored Paul Janish who reached on a one out walk and Dayton led 2-0. Habelito Hernandez plated Himes with an RBI double and Dayton led 3-0.

Ramon Ramirez (ND) gave the Dragons a quality start and then some, tossing 5.0 innings of three hit baseball. Ramirez fanned four Whitecaps in his outing on Thursday, giving him 10 strikeouts in two appearances covering 9.0 innings against WM this season.

The Whitecaps got things back to square with three runs in the bottom of the sixth off Dragons reliever Brad Morenko (WP, 4-1). Steve Young and Wilkin Ramirez picked up RBI singles to get WM to within 3-2. With two down, Matt Parrish picked up an RBI double to left and the game was tied at 3-3.

Dayton answered the West Michigan three spot in the sixth inning with a pair of runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. With one out and two on, Dan Konecny (LP, 1-4) was lifted for Ian Ostlund (ND). Ostlund gave up RBI hits to Himes and Jeremiah Piepkorn to put the Dragons back on top. Himes' single scored Cody Strait for a 4-3 lead and Piepkorn's single scored Janish for a 5-3 lead.

Dayton added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning on a Janish run producing single off Jay Sborz (ND) that scored Craig Tatum, who led of the inning with a double.

Blake Hendley (SV, 3) retired the Whitecaps in order in the ninth to notch the save.

The Dragons continue the eight game road trip on Friday night, opening a four game series in Burlington, Iowa against the Midwest League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, the Burlington Bees. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries Friday's game live beginning with the pre game show at 7:30 PM. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:00 PM with the Dragons scheduled to throw RHP Zac Stott. The Bees open the four game series with LHP Matt Campbell taking the mound.
