Bismarck Larks News Release
The Bismarck Larks defeated the Mankato Moondogs by a score of 8-4 on Wednesday, July 10th. The Larks and Moondogs battled early in the game before Northwoods Player of the Night, Matt Warkentin took matters into his own hands. This is the first time the Larks have beaten the Moondogs in the second half of the season which helped them improve to 2-5 in the second half so far.
What's Next: The Larks travel to Willmar to take on the Stingers on Thursday, July 11th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
How It Happened: The Larks scratched one across in the top of the first inning on a two-out RBI single from the cleanup hitter, Alex Peterson. The Moondogs answered back by tying the game in the bottom half of the first inning.
Starting in the second inning the game turned into the Matt Warkentin show. Matt Warkentin slugged a solo home run on the first pitch of the second inning to straight away center field to retake the lead 2-1 for the Larks. Warkentin then stepped to the plate with two runners on in his next at-bat in the 3rd inning. On the first pitch once again, Warkentin delivered a towering 3-run home run to add to the Larks advantage to make it 5-1.
Starting pitcher Bradley Collins really settled down after the first inning as he didn't allow another run the rest of his outing. He ended his outing throwing six innings (five scoreless) while allowing just 1 run, 7 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts en route to the victory.
The Larks added three more runs in the 5th inning. The Larks loaded the bases with one out for Brian Leonhardt who singled in the first run in the inning. Zack Gregory then knocked in the final two runs of the inning with two outs with a single to right field with the bases loaded to increase the Larks lead to 8-1.
The Moondogs scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. All of the runs were scored with two outs as well off of relief pitcher Zach Harlan. The Moondogs actually had the tying run at the plate in the inning before Harlan got out of it to hold on to the 8-4 lead.
Fernando Diaz Jr. then shut the door on the Moondogs recording the final 6 outs in the game. This was one of the best outings for Diaz Jr. on the season as he faced 6 batters and got 6 outs to close out the win for the Larks. The final score was 8-4.
Beyond The Boxscore: 8 of 9 Larks in the starting lineup produced hits in the game while 5 of the 9 had multiple hits in the game. Matt Warkentin now has 3 home runs in the last two games and has driven in 8 runs in the last 3 games. His total RBI tally is up to 12 in just 9 games.
