Abbotsford Heat News Release
Omaha, NE - The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights got a late goal from Mark Giordano, his second of the game, to beat the Milwaukee Admirals 3-2 on Friday night at the Civic Auditorium. In the process, the Knights snapped a five-game winless streak and a seven-game winless skid at home.
Giordano got the scoring started just 2:28 into the game. Dave Moss pried the puck off the right wing wall and found Giordano coming late. He beat goalie Brian Finley with a wrist shot inside the near post for a powerplay goal.
The Admirals tied the game on their own powerplay. Rich Peverley slid the puck to defenseman Kevin Klein who moved down the slot and tucked a backhander past Curtis McElhinney for his fourth goal of the year.
Milwaukee took the lead less than eight minutes later when Kris Beech got free in the slot for a shot that beat McElhinney to the stick side. The Admirals led 2-1 after one.
Omaha tied the game midway through the second period. Brandon Prust did a good job of forechecking, forcing a turnover in the Admirals zone. Derek Couture grabbed the loose puck, walked in and beat Finley with a wrist shot for his first professional goal.
The third period moved at a breakneck pace with each team enjoying good chances to retake the lead. The deciding goal came off a draw just inside the Milwaukee zone. Newly added defenseman Tim Hambly scooped up the face-off win by Moss and threw a pass across the blueline to Giordano who blew a shot past Finley for his seventh goal of the year.
The Knights weathered a late Milwaukee powerplay that turned into a six-on-four advantage when Finley was pulled for an extra attacker. The 3-2 win for the Knights was their first at home since November 25 when they beat Iowa 3-1.
The Knights are now 14-14-1-7. They have beaten the Admirals in back-to-back games. With the win and an Iowa win at San Antonio, the Knights will play the Stars tomorrow night in Des Moines for sole possession of third place in the West Division. Game time is 7:35 p.m. The game can be heard on 1420 AM KOTK and on the internet at omahaaksarbenknights.com. The game can also be seen on-line by clicking on the B2 Networks link on the Knights' home page.
Omaha returns to home ice on Friday, January 6, 2006 when the Chicago Wolves come to town for a 7:00 p.m. face-off.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
