Charlotte Knights News Release
(DURHAM, NC) -- Six days ago, Sebastián Rivero hit the first grand slam of the season for the Charlotte Knights in the club's 63rd game of 2023. It didn't take quite that long for the team to add a second grand slam to its season total.
Shortstop Erik González launched a grand slam in a five-run sixth inning and Víctor Reyes swatted two home runs to help power the Knights past the Durham Bulls by a score of 10-4 on Saturday night in game five of the six-game series from Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC. With the win, the Knights now lead the series 3-2.
The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning thanks to solo home runs from Reyes and Carlos Pérez. For Reyes, the solo home run was his team-leading 12th of the season. He wasn't done there.
Two innings later, the Knights broke open the game with five runs in the sixth inning. The big inning was highlighted by the grand slam from González, his third home run of the season.
In the ninth inning, the Knights used the home run ball again. Adam Haseley crushed a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Knights a 9-2 lead. Reyes then followed with a solo home run, his team-leading 13th of the season. In all, Reyes went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, two home runs and two RBI. He leads the Knights this season in batting average (.315), hits (75), home runs (13) and RBI (54).
LHP Sammy Peralta started the game for Charlotte and did not allow a run over 2.2 innings pitched in his first start since 2019. Peralta walked two batters and fanned four. RHP Luke Farrell (1-3, 7.13) earned the win in relief of Peralta. Farrell gave up just one hit over 2.2 shutout innings.
RHP Bryan Shaw, who came on with the bases loaded and the Knights ahead by a score of 7-2 in the eighth inning, earned his second save of the season. Shaw allowed two runs over 1.1 innings pitched on the night.
The Knights will conclude the six-game road series against the Durham Bulls (Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) from Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Sunday. The "Voice of the Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action on www.CharlotteKnights.com. First pitch on Sunday is set for 5:05 p.m. from the DBAP.
